hey all
im 15 years old in 3 weeks. and i will have my license. i was debating getting a mitsubishi eclipse, because i hear they are quite customizable and very good first cars. Everyone kept telling me to look for a GSX< but i see that most of the ones i look for have like 100k+ mileage. That might be a little bit too much mileage, so i decided not to go for it. It looks like i currently cant find any GSX's that are good on Carsoup.com, so i want to find out some other DSM'ers opinions. Now i think my choices have been narrowed down to the GST, GTS or the GS.

Which will offer some good speed, and looks? I want to spend aroudn $9000-$10,000 total, with the mods

as a new car owner, id like to get some good opinions

if you can help me out on which is better and what is good for a first time car owner, and which has some good speed, GTS or a GS, or a GST, please do

Thank you very much

Is there a certain year your looking at? The GTS is 00-04 if I remember correctly and we don't deal with those here really. 100k miles is about where they all are nowadays. Remember, these are at least 7 years old. With 9-10k thought, you could get one in good shape plus everything you want on it if you strike a good deal.

yeah, so either the GST, a GSX if i can find one that is good, but dont know where, or a GS

those are my choices

gsx i thought is only 95-99, so that would be for that, any GST as long as it isnt a convertible, and GS i dont know much about?

where are some good places to look? on here?

Well if you want speed, then your choice is either gst or gsx, since they come with a turbo stock. I recommend a gsx because it is awd and definately get stick shift! good luck

Hey man, I'll try to help you out with some easy questions.
Firstly, I hope you know what your getting into(buying an eclipse), You'll love your car absolutely, but hate it, and more then likely put some good money and work into it, to make it nice and fast. Hopefully you like working on cars.
Now what you want to be looking for, differences in models..
Mitsbuishi Eclipse(1989-1999), Eagle Talon(1989-1998), Plymouth Laser(1989-1994)
All are the exact same car minus some minor exterior/decals.
Mitsubishi GSX - Eagle TSI AWD - Plymouth RS Turbo AWD
Are all the same models, representing a 2.0L Turbo Engine 4G63T, All Wheel Drive, Your Best Option..
Mitsubishi GST - Eagle TSI - Plymouth RS Turbo
Again the same models, representing a 2.0L Turbo 4G63T, Front Wheel Drive,
Mitsubishi GS - Eagle ES - Plymouth RS
Representing a 2.0L NON-Turbo 4G63, Front wheel drive
There's one more model made until 1995 that's a 1.8L, Front Wheel drive.
In 1996-1999 Mitsubishi Included a 2.4L 420a engine, Front Wheel Drive, in their GS Spyder.
The spyder would be the convertable. The spyder also comes with a GST(2.0L Turbo 4G63T Engine).
Places too look: On dsmtuners.com classified section, ebaymotors.com, Autotrader.com, cars.com, local dealerships if you please.
If you can have someone knowledgable with cars, go with you and check out the car before you buy it(a good inspection).
I'll give some advice now in saying that my TSI AWD was my first car years ago, and I knew nothing about it and even less about cars. I'm now a pretty well qualified mechanic thanks to it, haha.
As a first car you want a car normaly that is cheap, as you are new to driving more then likely, the odds of fender benders/crashes are slightly more likely. As for a "stick" manual shift, If you've ever driven manaul before and posed no problem go for it, or try it out and see if you can pick up on it. But you might want to consider an Automatic, which can be just as fast, and more forgiving.
100k miles isn't "that high", You could still enjoy a few years with no problems, and then you have the fun of rebuilding it and making it nicer.
Good Luck Kid!

well my question for the matter is..

what are your plans for the car. are you buying one for the looks, the speed, or just because everyone else has one and you can make them very fast.?

also im not big on telling ppl to get them as a first car. even more at your age. also i hope you enjoy working on your car alot. because you will always be changing parts and upgrading things. if you want a car that is reliable that doesnt require alot of maintence. then dont look into these cars as being that.

i am on my second DSM 96GST and now a 90GSX.

if you decided to get a DSM. a true DSM is from 89-99. which means if you want a DSM with power you will have to get either a GST GSTspyder or a GSX.. i strongly recommend getting a 5speed IF you ALREADY know how to drive a standard.. if you do not.. LEARN first on another car or get a automatic.. this trannys arnt that forgiving on first timers.. stalls n grinds for very long.

also 100k miles isnt that bad. i bought my 96 with 125k and my 90 at 153k so 100k isnt bad at all.

so which ever you pick. happy DSMin! and good luck with the car.

i got my 96 GST for 5k and my i was offered 1k and a 1g GSX for my GST. so i guess you could say it was free.

Hah, come on your just mad cause you didn't get a 10k 1g at 15.
I bought a 2,000 1g at 15.

You saw right through me. ROFL

Yeah, the talon was my first car. I bought it for 700 bucks when I turned 16. All is needed was the master cylinder rebuilt. :thumb:

You can get a nice stock or a little modded GSX for 10g in the classified. I would recomend getting a 97 and up because they have the better frount bumper and in my opinion they look the best. Once you drive stick you love it forever!

Honestly, no offense, but my opinion is.. Do not get a turbocharged vehicle as your first car. Start with something slower, and learn how the hell to drive first. We do NOT need more TSI AWD's or GSX's ending up as a ####ing compacted garbage cube.
