My car has been running great since the Big16g install and today after I had been putting around I went to get on it and on and once the boost got around 13psi it started to spudder and blow black smoke, I stopped checked my pipes and tried it again and it still is running like crap under boost. Any ideas at all, Please, I am going to the track saturday to get some 1/4mile times. Any advise or ideas at all please. I did not notice any differance on todays logs from yesterdays. No Knock either.

Could it be a boost leak, could it be bad tuning, my safc is set a zero(factory)

Black Smoke = running VERY rich.

Trying leaning the motor out some. You seem to be running rich on the O2s, and you are getting 0 knock. Lean it out until you see some knock and richin it up a few percent and see how it works then.

Also have you done a compression test lately?? I was running very rich and blow tons on black smoke and would shutter. What happened was I burnt and exhaust valve and it was throwing my turbo into surge and it was just all pissed off.

Or it could just be a boost leak. If the car drives normally around town then sputters and billows black smoke under boost it's probably a boost leak. Test for leaks and fix the ones that you will have.

Hey bob, The black smoke is from running rich. You have to look into why you are getting fuel dumped into your motor under boost. The first thing I would check is that fuel pressure reguator that you had problems with in the past. The mechonism inside the regualor may be bad and spiking the fuel pressure when it sees any kind of boost. Try driving around with a fuel pressure gauge mounted on your windsheild and watch what happens to the pressure under boost. It should not spike. It should be a gradual incresss as the boost goes up so does the pressure.
Also check your base timing you should see some counts of knock 3-5 counts on a full pass is normal and lets you know your timing is being advanced as much as possible by the computer. 0 counts of knock tells you your base timing possibly a little low.
I was thinking you may have the record for more hours spent on fixing the BS than driving it. :D Hey at least your motor is still in your car. :(

I agree with IPT about leaning your SAFC out to get some knock showing and also leaning it out some will put more HP to the wheels. Check the timing after if still no knock.
Bob are you still running the 1g mass and the 450s??

how do you guys figure he's running rich???? Did you see his O2s? Also, why is your tps only at 99.6%? Your timing curve doesn't look right either .. check for boost leaks asap.

I was boosting at 17psi when I did the log, it started the black smoke at 13psi.

It is just wierd because yesterday the car was running like a Mofo, seriously, it was screaming ass fast, I have been shocked since the turbo upgrade.

Today it just started this crap, blowing the black smoke, and it starts blowing right when it starts studdering, surely it's just a boost leak??? Right, god I hope. I just want to get this thing ironed out, but yes Kris I will check the afpr in the morn, I am going to the race shop and see if they have the fitting to run my fuel psi gauge to the winsheild, it just seems so weird that it just started doing this, and I have been babying it since that last log. Thanks for the advise guys, I really have to get it ready by Saturday.

Ok, I fixed the problem, runs perfect again.

The found the cure after doing a boost leak test and figured out I was leaking boost out of turbo intercooler outlet, the one that is held down by 2 bolts, the one that comes out of the top of the turbo itself. I had bought the turbo(Big16g) off ebay and it may have been stripped on one of the bolts, because I tourqed all bolts to spec, anyway it was leaking out of the one that stripped so I tapped and re-threaded it with a bigger bolt and now it's fixed.

It's crazy that a little boost leak could cause all those problems.

Good deal!! Let us know how you paned out at the track. I will be running the same set up and would like to know what to expect.
