Ok, so on my way to school today my power steering went out, then all my power, then my engine overheated. I looked under the hood and realized my alternator belt was gone! After some inspection the power steering, alternator, and water pump pulleys all still spin freely. The car has all new belts, and has been sqeaking for quite some time. I changed all the belts about 5 months ago, and we had problems with this same belt then but weren't sure if it was just a fluke or something. Now positive something's wrong, but what? I thought the squeak was my power steering pump, but the car was squeaking longer than usual and didn't stop til the belt snapped off. It doesn't squeak anymore! Could it be my water pump maybe? Please help me out here! Thanks in advance for any advice! BTW, the car's a 97 Talon TSi, 77k.

LOL oo ok! I feel a little dumb  Ok I'm getting that new crank pulley any day now. Actually turns out my friend who wrecked his Talon with only 45k is parting it out, and I'm going to get it from him for cheap (same year as mine and everything). I'll be careful not to break the bolts ;) Though with my luck all will go to hell the second I pop the hood. Thanks again guys!

my first crank pulley separated after 45000kms (thats like 27 000 miles ) ..get a new one

Well that one already fell threw for a few reasons  .. I actually just got done ordering a new one LOL, but thanks!

I hope you went with one with damperbuilt in, but if you went with a underdrive, you will need new belts.

I had the same problem that you had untill i went to a local garage and had them check it surly it was the water pump seizing up so they replaced it and it only squelled a couple more times because the belts were new and needed some wear in time. when you take it to a garage and get the pump replaced, get the timimg belt replaced because mine was almost gone and the guy said i was running on borrowed luck

Well I actually don't know if the damper's built in because my dad ordered it. I'm def. going to check on that now though ;) And we're actually going to do my timing belt now too. I've had it sitting in my garage for about 3 months now, we've been procrastinating on it. Yes I know that's stupid of us and yes I'll get the new one on soon as possible. I'm going to get a new water pump too for the timing belt change.

haha hell yea I'm into DSM's.. my car's my baby :) LOL and I guess I'll try to remember to mention my gender next time :p

Soo I'm finally updating on the belt/crank pulley situation. Yes, I know it took a long time. My tranny ended up dying a week or so after all of this and that became my priority. Anyways, I changed the pulley.. to an underdrive pulley. I just realized all the possible consequenses from switching to underdrive, so as soon as everything's caught up and I have more money I'm getting rid of it. Here's the main prob. though. That new pulley's on, and a new belt, AND IT'S STILL SQUEAKING! Not near so bad right now.. but it'll progress. As of now it's only squeaking right when you turn the car on for a second, and only when it's cold. Anyone have any other suggestions? Because obviously it's not the crank pulley

Those short duration squeals are the worst! They only last long enough to pop the hood but not long enough to isolate which belt. Is it worse when you have your lights, defogger, or wipers on? If so, it's probably the alt. belt which is the most likely culprit anyway.

Try tightening the tension one turn of the bolt at a time. Wait for the next cold start to see if the squeal is gone. Don't tighten too much.

Some people claim to have good luck with belt dressing. It never had lasting results for me.

If you just finished the install give it some time. New belts takes a little time to settle. I always have to go back and retighten them so do what wret said.

Yea it's always the alt. belt I have the trouble with. We retightened it earlier today.. so far so good. If it lasts I'll be amazed and HAPPY :)

LOL you guys didnt catch she was a girl by the name, BRITS , what else whould BRIT stand for LOL,

I have an underdrive pulley, was having the same problem you had, took the crank out it was nasty chewed up. Put on under drive pulley with new belts havent had a problem since.

That's good to hear. And so far it's still not squeaking :D

^ I was thinking the same thing!

LOL Does "crawl" means you walk on all fours? [/QUOTE]

hahah he makes a good point there tho :)

Yet another question and concern. So the underdrive's on, the belt has been retightened 3 times now? But has not been squeaking for about a week so that should be good. Now I'm really paranoid about the underdrive thing hearing all about the possible crankwalk issues and stuff. Ever since the new underdrive crank pulley (that by the way has no dampener  ) there's this rubbing/grinding noise. More noticeable on a cold start then once it's warmed up. It's a pretty faint sound but you can def. hear it. Is this because I have no dampener maybe?.. or something completely different? I want a dampener so I can stop worrying so much, can anyone give me an idea on a price for that.. and what this freaking rubbing noise may be?! Thanks :)
