I apologize if I am being repetitive, but I can't really find a good answer as to why GM Maf Sensors are used on the GSXS. I have one in the garage, and am wondering if this will really be benifical to the car if I put it on. If anyone can offer me insight into the reasoning behind this I would appreciate it.
 
It has the ability to calculate more air way more air for that matter. so where a 1g will top out and get over ran air wise, and then eventually the 2g maf will get over ran. where at the 3inch gm maf will not. atleast this is my understanding. however I believe to run the 3 inch gm maf you would need a way to tune the car, and you have to have the maf translator
 
Hmm thats really interesting. This leeds me to my next question. I have fuel cut at 5k due to using the stock ecu. I called JK Tuning and they told me I was hitting the limits programmed in the stock ecu and would need it reprogrammed. If I would do the MAF conversion, would this eliminate my fuel cut?
 
fuel cut, is when the injectors are topped out and can't supply anymore fuel because they have reached there limits. if its too do with the maf it would be your over running it and it can't allow anymore air in. however 2g's are better then the 1g maf and the 1g maf takes quite a bit to over run.
 
So maybe the ecu does need to be chipped/reprogrammed then. The car has a 20g turbo with a tubular exhaust manifold, custom turbo elbow with an external dump for the wastegate, and a 3in exhaust. Nothing special, its on stock boost, and when floored dies at 5k every gear. The guy from JK Tuning seemed pretty intellegent towards the situation, so I guess I am leaning towards the ecu again.
 
The injectors and fuel pump are stock (this is going to change soon) and the boost is at 8lbs yes. I am pretty certain its the ecu, just on the fact alone the car is rich up until 5k when it dies. Any thoughts tho are greatly appreciated.
 
with a maft, you can tune to achieve what you want.
you will NEED a datalogger, and a wideband o2 FOR SURE!
but with that, you can tune out boost cut, but you will probably learn what's really causeing it first.
maft will make you smarter and help tune what ever you want.
link seems to be prefered, but i havent bought it yet.
i have 2 cars with maft and they spool like lightning.
it's kinda tricky, but hey what isn't with these cars. but it's awesome for plug and play fuel control.
but you NEED the data logger ot watch knock and fuel trims and timing and a WIDEBAND o2 to make sure.
other than that, easy. way better than stock.
 
I am on a stock pump with stock injectors, and I only hit fuel cut at just under redline, and that's at 16lbs with stock turbo. I think you need to get a wideband and see what afr you are running at boost. If its rich, the Maft can help you tune that down and lean it out for WOT and for cruising.
 
gm maf would be easier to come by, I may end up getting one myself depending on how hard speed density is to use.

I would try simple things first to be on the safe side like fuel filter, cleaning injectors, little things that take more time then money. never hurts to change the fuel filter.

Incorrect. Fuel cut is reached when a set amount of airflow is read by the maf sensor. IT has nothing to do with fuel pump, fuel injectors or anything else. If you are getting boost leaks than likely you have a boost leak.
 
Yes its not a boost leak. I have to be hitting a limit set in the stock ecu. It builds boost and holds it until 5k. Once it hits 5k (when the car is pretty much floored) it just dies. Like your actually kinda thrown forward in the seat. When shifted, it builds again and pulls til 5k where it does it again. I don't have a wideband (which I know I need to get) but the narrowband I do have stays in the green up until 5k. To me it just seems like the computer is kicking in with its set limits and not letting me surpass it.
 
I assume that you have tested for boost leaks? What size turbo at what psi are you running. A boost leak will cause the car to fuel cut faster because of more metered air.
 
The GM maft has a fuel cut defender built in. go with it. my buddy had a 20g on his 2g running 14psi, stock injectors, walbro 255, and NEVER hit fuel cut. wideband stayed at about 10.5 at wot.
 
audiomaster, thanks for the info. That sounds like it might work then in my situation. I'm not looking to make a race car, just want to be able to drive it how I want, and know its going to run right. I'm most likely going to do bigger injectors and a fuel pump, mainly just for over protection.

Everything is set at stock, along with the injectors being stock.
 
Let's think this through to see if this sounds like a good idea.

In order to keep the ECU from triggering fuel cut the device has to lie to the ECU about how much air is entering the cylinders and never report more then some value X. (like Brian said, fuel cut has nothing to due with injector capacity or running out of fuel, it's a protection against the wastegate failing on a stock car and overboosting. The ECU has a limit of how much air should flow through the engine worst case and cuts off the fuel it it's exceeded)

The ECU in turn uses the amount of air measured to calculate the amount of fuel required to meet the target AFR for that much air.

If the Translator stops reporting the correct airflow at value X then the ECU won't add additional fuel as required for anything over X and the engine will get progressively leaner as the airflow increases.

That doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

With everything being stock, you have to be leaking air somewhere to cause the MAF to measure enough airflow to trigger fuel cut.

I'm not sure how you get a 20G to only do 8psi without a serious leak. I didn't think they made WGA for it that will go that low.
 
Agree'd, if everything is stock than the car should run just fine on the stock maf and stock ecu. You don't need a gm maf and translator to just get the car to run like it did from the factory.
