I don't know what else to call it--brake scum. It's that nasty black brake pad stuff that cakes and bakes on the inside of the wheel.
I have the tires dismounted and scrubbed them muthas with parts cleaner, brake cleaner, Orange stuff, bug & tar remover, scouring pads, razor blades, and stiff brushes. Wire brushing takes it off, but it also puts nasty scratch marks in the powder coat. Every once in a while, I can catch an edge with the razor scraper, and big chunks flake off.
I got about 90% of it off, but the really caked and baked stuff remains. Anybody got a magic formula? I even tried coca-cola.
I don't mind paying somebody a little to "dip" the wheels in something or other, but I don't know where to go to get them dipped, or what to dip them in.
The wheels are powder coated.
By the bye, as long as we are on the subject of wheels, I measured them as being 8.5 inches from outer rim to outer rim and 7.5 in. from inner rim to inner rim. So how wide are they? 8 1/2 or 7 1/2?
All ideas on cleaning these puppies are welcome.
