I read someone else's post about possible jumped timing, so I went out to check mine. What I found first was more disturbing...

Has anyone seen this before? I've never run with the cover off, and the belt was in perfect condition a few months ago. It also has less than 30k on it and has no slack. I've also developed a new screech noise on clutch engagement and now just hard free reving. It comes from the belt side of the engine but doesn't quite sound like a belt. Could this be related? I didn't have the noise at the time when the belt didn't have the gash.

Aside from something falling in there, which I don't see happening with the covers on, what could cause this? The balance shafts are already removed so that belt isn't the problem either.

Looks like it's time to replace the belt. Pull the covers off and I'm sure you will find the cause of the gash.

have you dropped the oil pan lately? it's quite possible that you put the bolts in the wrong place. there are two (I think) that are shorter than the rest, and if you put the longer ones there they can protrude and cut into the timing belt.

Damn Im to slow

If you had the oil pan off any time after the belt change or during, did you perhaps put the wrong oil pan bolt in the corner cause theres 2 shorter ones that go below the timing belt.

Yeah i would 100% change that belt, never take a chance with the t-belt. Is the timing cover cracked or open on any part below the top cover? Something could have bounced up in there.

Yea I hate this car more ever day. I just had $1,700 worth of clutch system work done and now 2 weeks later its time to do a belt, lovely. I hate this car more than I did when I wrote that last sentence.

Maybe I'll throw an underdrive pulley on while its all off to make me feel like I accomplished something.:toobad:

I just want to know if its something serious, not that its gona help, but its nice to know before I get in there and die of shock.

M@therF@CK$R!!! That's it! I didn't even pay attention to that. And on top of that, one of the holes was completely stripped (the threads came out with the bolt, so I just put a random larger bolt into the hole). And it was the one under the belt!! SOAB! ARRRRHHHH!!!!

Well its not all bad...you learned something...well nevermind yeah its bad, i hate changing timing belts. But atleast now you know one more thing to look out for

Well lets put this in perspective. I've been driving like that since the pan was replaced, about 3-4 months ago. I think it should be ok to bring me to work for the rest of the week. It isn't going to get cut any further when I go change the bolts, and probably is already cut as far as it will be.

If that was my car I wouldn't start the engine until the belt was replaced. I've lost too many engines to freakish timing belt mishaps.
