Yes, you have to remove the drive shaft.

But check if your fuel pump unit and fuel gauge unit gaskets (under back seat) aren't the cause first, if you haven't already.

If the tank itself is leaking: There was a recall for leaking tanks for at least 95 AWDs, check if your 98 is affected too.
