Galant gsx shafts in a gvr4 tranny, will it work?

This may seem like a dumb question, but I'm bored and need some entertainment. To make it short, I killed my gvr4 tranny in October (stripped the teeth off 1st). I recently picked up a Galant gsx non-turbo tranny for cheap. According to the vfaq,the 1-4 gear ratios are the same, but final drive is different and for those who don't know, won't work in a dsm. I yanked my DD transmission out to finish out the race season and ended up breaking a fork in that one, so I'm sitting on 3 un-usable transmissions right now. The US tranny I can fix by just replacing the fork, which is on order, but got to thinking about fixing the gvr4 tranny with the parts from the gsx tranny.


Now lets say the input and intermediate shafts have the same tooth count, and the shaft sits right in the bearing race, the material should be the same and theoretically the same as the gvr4 shaft correct? Then I could use my front diff, center diff, and output shaft? I'm really a transmission newb, especially when it come to matching ratios up in an awd, but I have fixed mine quite a few times and am comfortable being inside of it. In fact I can change a shift fork in a half an hour which is quite sad. :p Comments please.
 
The only thing that makes the GSX tranny not useable is the front differential. The ratio's are different than the GVR4. The U.S. GVR4 and the Dsm's use a 3.545 differential gear, the Galant GSX uses a 2.846. You just need to swap the front diff or the rear diff to match the gears.
 
Awesome, so I just throw all the gsx stuff in my gvr4 tranny with the gvr4 front diff and I'm good to go? I have a switchable, I don't think that matters, its the same ratio as a us dsm tranny and I loved the switchable before I destroyed it.
 
I think it would be a lot easier to just get a GSX rear diff. See if you can get it from the person you got the tranny from.
 
Unfortunately he doesn't have it. He was going to put this transmission in a dsm. I actually didn't know its was a galant tranny until I got it home and ran the numbers. My gvr4 tranny is already torn apart so its not a big issue to yank the other one apart and swap front differentials. I have a 4 bolt rear so changing the rear isn't really an option for me at this point. One of these things is getting dog gears this summer, I just need to get one together for my DD, and one together to break my new engine in.
 
I would bet that the GGSX shafts may have a different heat treat or different material properties.


If you end up not using it, let me know. I'll buy it off you. (I've got two GGSX's)
 
I will definately consider that. If you can use it, I'd rather sell it to you instead of making it a scrap pile.
