Hello. I have been an enthusiast of the Mitsubishi Eclipse for about 4 years now ever since watching The Fast and The Furious and am determined to buy one, one day. The problem is, I live in the UK, so my knowledge of the cars is quite limited. I was wondering if any of you out there have full technical specifications of the GS, GSX, GST and RS models of the eclipse within the '96-'99 era. I'm looking forward to importing a good stock '99 model with around 40-70k on the clock, but I need some background info first obviously, before I buy.

If anyone can help me, I will be very grateful. Thank you! :thumb:

RS- No Power Options, Cloth Seats
GS-ALL Power Options, Cloth Seats
GS-T- ALL Power options,High Spoiler,16" Stock Rims,Leather Seats
GSX- Same As GS-T
GS OZ Edition- Same as GS-T and GSX , but this model is non-Turbo. Looks like a turbo but it is really non.

Hope this helps alittle depending on what options you want. I have a GS-T and LOVE it.... :dsm:

:p Big thanks to both of you. I'm liking the leather seats compared to cloth seats (even though my pug has cloth, and is pretty comfy! no offence pug). So that narrows it down to either GS-T or GSX. The question at the present moment is now.. out of the 2.. which would I prefer? My peugeot is an FWD and has great handling, especially taking corners at high speed (i'm surprised the police haven't caught me yet). Would the FWD GS-T have better road handling compared to the AWD GSX?

Not sure about handling, my Tsi AWD has excellent handling... I'd say go for the GSX either way. Launching with an awd car is just ridiculously fun.

With AWD you will have better all season handling and will be faster out of the hole, especially when you are making more power. With FWD you will be slower out of the hole but faster once your tires hook up, and when cruising on the highways. Both configurations stock run about the same in the 1/4 mile with average drivers.

With FWD your problem will be torque steer. This can be corrected for the most part with tuning. If you go to the drivetrain section at www.vfaq.com you will find mods for equal length halfshafts which will help you out if the torque steer bothers you.

I haven't run in the autocross but I've heard some guys prefer FWD for that. So if that's your thing you might want to consider FWD as it'll be easier for you to toss the car around.

Regarding the seats, I've found the cloth seats in my 1G to be very comfortable but the leather seats in my 2G are very supportive. Both are AWD and I also find that my 1G with LSD in the rear gives me better performance in wet weather compared to my 2G with the open rear diff. The 1G pull itself out of snow it is literally bottoming out on but the 2G has got stuck a couple times requiring some rocking to get it going.

Good luck finding the car of your dreams. Watch out for scams and if buying from the US be sure to check out the companies on the better business bureau website. Autotrader.com would be a good start for your search.

The Awd GSX is faster off the line but you also have to look at the 700 lb. heavier than the FWD GS-T so if you have the right mods you can make the GS-T alot faster than the GSX. I LOve my Gs-t i have a ton of exterior stuff done to it. My engine mods are basic. An Injen Intake, and HKS SSQV BOV. Take a look at my gallery if you have time.... :dsm:

Now Im confused, 700bls???? I thought a Gsx was only 300-400lbs heavier

Yes, after looking at this table on vfaq, it shows that the GSX is 200-300lbs heavier. Hmmm do I go for the GS-T or GSX. I'm so confused LOL :)

Ok.. I think I'm beginning to sway towards the GS-T, simply due to availability, weight advantage and possibly a lower second hand price. My concern now is down to insurance and running costs. Out of the two.. GS-T and GSX.. which do you think would come out cheapest overall to run?

not sure how the insurance is over there but for me i own a 97 eclipse gs-t and my insurance is 150 a month liability, since i only have 1 year driving experience, 1 point on record (accident that wasnt even my fault), im only 18.

you're 18 and you own an eclipse gst!!!!! you are 1 lucky man. i'm 18 as well. i've always wanted an eclipse but it's impossible to get em over here. i bet they're as common as ford escorts in america aren't they?! I think my peugeot costs more to insure than your gs-t! about £1200 a year to insure.. which is about $2400. only a 1.6 too! :cry:

I'm 18 With a 1997 Eclipse Gs-t and I have no Past Record. My insurance is 190 a month with full coverage. :dsm:

dam, thats cheap for full coverage. around here not that many eclipse/talon. i rarely see any eclipse/talon when i drive. i usually see about 2 or 3 eclipse a day or not at all. mainly see honda/acura

gs-t's have less parts to break and that's what i would recommend for anyone living out of the country. i love awd and wouldn't trade it for anything, but if i lived somewhere else, i would probably want a fwd since there are less drivetrain parts and less likelihood that i'll need parts that i can't get or would be hard/expensive to get.

does that make sense?
