fuel trims not changing

okay im getting pretty pissted because all i want to do is stop all this sputtering and lagging BS and i cant because my fuel trims WONT change . ITS BEEN A WEEK AND THE DAMN THINGS ARE STILL AT 100% AFTER RESETING THE ECU!. i thought it was the o2 sensor even tho at idle it was cycling between 0.0 and 9.9. after changing it i had no results what so ever. im completly stumped any info will be appreciated.

do you have a logger? Does it show the coolant temp at about 190-200? Any other things wrong with your car?

from what i remember i see coolant temps of 205. thats in stop and go traffic in florida. but let me go get my logger really quick and check some logs to see what the coolant temp was at. if its not getting up to temp how can i resolve this problem to get my fuel trims to change

okay i know its been awhile but im still having problems with my fuel trims not changing. but now they say 81.1% for the low,medium, and high trims. also my coolant temps are between 80-90 degrees. what can i do to increase my false coolant temps

Most likely your coolant temp sensor is bad. Make sure you replace the one for the ECU not for the gauge. Also, your thermostat might be stuck open, not allowing the coolant to get hot enough.

By the way, IllEgal, you get a rep point for your excellent response, realizing that the car must be up to operating temps before the FT's will change.

well the other day i bought a whole new thermostat housing with all sensors on it from ebay. i put it on and they still dont change. now this isnt saying that the sensors are good im just saying they are probably running better then my other ones. now when i was putting it all back together i noticed all of the wires that plug into the thermostat housing were all dry rot and were not in good shape at all. do you think that this could be my problem?

Is your logger in ºC becuase around 90ºC would be about right. If its in ºF. Get an ohmeter and check the CTS, resistance goes down as temp goes up.

well i run mmcd on a palm so i dont think their is anyway to change between ºC and ºF. what exactly do is the CTS? also i should test the car while its cold and see if the resistance goes down as the engine temps go up?

yeah this problem really sucks doesnt it! i think what the problem is (at least on my car) that all the plugs that plug into the thermostat housing are all dry rot because of the heat these engines put out. im going to go to a junk yard and clip the 2 or 3 clips i need off and try that. ill enform you if this works man.

well i run mmcd on a palm so i dont think their is anyway to change between ºC and ºF.

Start MMCd, click on the title bar, select options then preferences, change units setting to english.

yeah i have a multimeter. what wires am i going to be testing? what numbers am i going to be looking for? sorry for dumb questions im not really good at all this wiring stuff.

You want to check the resistance of the sensor with the 2 perpendicular prongs. At 68* it should be 2.45 +/- 0.24 k OHMs and at 176* it should read 296 +/- 32 OHMs. Even if its not that exact temp just make sure its somewhere close, especially the 176 value...

well since my coolant temps dont go past 90 degrees no matter if the engine is hot or cold i guess i will just check it before and after i take a drive in it. what sensor on the thermostat housing am i checking?

The 2 prong sensor on the bottom with the black plug.
