Alright just a quick post im only getting about 300km or 186 miles to a tank 97 talon tsi awd pretty much stock which is about 13.5 km per 100L or 17.5 mpg and worse now that its winter about 200km to a tank, about an even mix of city and highway and this is driving easy 3000-4000rpm shifts max, tune up is done, front o2 has been changed the only maintenance related item left is the fuel filter which is 2 hours to change and its been -30 out so yea . when i fill up with fuel i can smell gas in the car so i was thinking fuel pump o ring might be shot and that could cause some of this. any ideas out there.

Fuel injectors leak could be possible also and maybe an exhaust leak.

thats what i get on mine and i have no problems whatsoever ..... i've just learned to live with crappy ass gas mileage . around 15 mpg whether its highway or street . on the plus side it still passes smog .

That's really crappy gas mileage...but I get about the same ...no tune and running a bit rich but will get it fixed after this tank dsmlink is going in =)

I see about the same mpg around 15 mpg, i mean its as bad as having a v8 camaro , but im trying to self tune for low and mid load with a maft gen 2. I wonder what was the mpg of our cars when they came out from the factory. And shouldnt the mpg be the same from when it was stock if the car doesnt see WOT being as its working in closed loop mode regardless of mods?

Wow! I thought I had it bad, ive been seeing 21 hwy and about 15 city, 18 combined roughly. Ya know for a 4 cyl, the mileage realy isnt all that hot. Oh well, speed don't come cheap.

well i guess im not the only one then, i was thinking leaking injectors could be a cause, my car starts like crap when its cold and not plugged in anytime its below -10 and has been sitting for 8 hours or so, it takes a few trys and likes to stumble unless i give it some gas but after that if i fire it up its fine starts right up so maybe my cyl walls are getting washed and low compression on the first start up.

Running rich will burn/waste more gas. Having a garbage tune or no tune at all will hurt mpg. Boost leak, bad o2 sensor, boosting all the time, bad spark plugs/wires will all yield bad gas mileage. My mpg is around 20 or so with weekend boosting.

the only boost leak i have left is my BISS and its minor just havent gotten around to changing it yet it just chips away so i have to remove my TB, o2's are good, dont boost much nothing over 4000rpm when shifting, tune up all replaced with NGK parts. ill have to put the scan tool on it and see if i can find out whats going on

I believe EPA is 23/31...but driving style is a big factor too.

I got 25/28 on my stock motor and 20/25 on my stroker motor so there is definitely a problem somewhere.

Does it drive fine or have any issues?

Very simple fix for this might be your coolant temp sensor off your coolant housing. Little brass screw in fitting with a connector (small one). This will cause your ECU to never see full temp. There for you will always be running in close loop? or open loop? Not sure but either way its bad if that sensors bad. That was my Gas mileage aid.

Have you searched your engine and fuel lines for leaks? If you smell gas, its leaking from somewhere. Also, have you ever tried anything to clean the engine with seafoam, or any oil additives? Hell, I used to add the fuel injector cleaner to another car that had 200k+, and it helped my mpg by 5.

Your gas mileage is terrible! I have a bunch of upgraded fuel mods, and I still get 22/28mpg.

I know I get around 25 mpg to 28 mpg. I have a 1990 GS.

Open loop, where the o2 sensor is not used to measure the air fuel ratio. I looked at my thermostat housing and i have the sensor but no connector! can you post a pic of it to see where it would run to.

dude it runs off the same harness that the CAS is plugged into, and theres 2 plugs on the therm. housing, both harnesses are right by eachother, just dig under the CAS, and behind the therm housing. you'll see it. hopefully.

I get on trips about 35 crusing around 75-80 and everyday back and forth to work half highway half city it get around 26-27. And my front o2 still says im running a little rich.

Damni just got 28 this last weekend.. I always get over 20... Any check engine lights.. Do you have any way to log your car to check coolant temps, fuel trims, o2 voltage..

if you look on the thermostat housing, there should be 2 sensors, one has one wire coming out of it ( for the stock gauge) and the other has 2 wires, which runs to the ecu, which one are you missing?

EPA ratings for the 1g's are 19 city 24 highway... Not sure about the 2g's. Let me look it up....


the 1997 TSi AWD is rated for:

5-spd: 19 city 26 Hwy

Auto: 17 city 23 Hwy

I thought mine was bad when i got 18mpg in my 99gst but i experimented driving easy and shifting at around 2000-2250 rpm but still reaching around 3000rpm on the highway and i got 23mpg which i think is still pretty crappy considering all i have is an intake on my car.....

I get about 15-18 city on average....but idk when the last time i checked was. I can almost never drive "normal" But seems about average...but i have basic bolt ons and no tune.

ive noticed on my tsi awd that i as well get around 180-200 miles to the tank, but maybe beacuase im always hitting the gas , i thought i was the only one with the issue, but apparently its common so i dont feel that bad now.
