Fuel issue I think?

Doesn't matter, Texas
I just recently bought my car back non running.

The previous owner had tried to install the brand new Walbro 255 I had given him with purchase of the car. Apparently the brand new Walbro was faulty so he put the stock fuel pump back in. He stated it ran after that, But one day the car just would not start. I have checked and the fuel pump is sending fuel because I pulled the line side of the fuel rail off and had fuel coming out when activating the pump via Link.

I am getting fuel into the cylinders because the spark plugs were wet with gasoline when I pulled them to check. Put new plugs in and checked spark, Am getting that too. What I am not understanding is when I pull the return side of the fuel rail off, There is no gas exiting the fuel rail and being returned to the tank.

I thought it might be lack of pressure, The gasket that seals the fuel assembly to the tank is pretty tore up but the pump is electronic therefore needs minimal pressure to work correct?

While cranking, The car will spit and sputter like it wants to start but sounds like it just doesn't have enough fuel. And yes I do have a full tank of gas.

I am stumped at the moment and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jayson :)

Check your compression and check your timing. Ive had this problem before when my cas wasnt properly set. Make sure to clean those plugs off first. You can try to cycle the key slowly from off to on, not start. Just off to on 3 times to ensure fuel pressure is built up before you crank it

Also did the guy put the plug wires on in the proper order?

The wires were not on correct. I noticed that before I had started to mess with the fuel. I put them in their proper spots and the plugs I put in were brand new and I had gaped them myself. I guess that is what I will do now is check the timing. Any idea why there would not be any fuel coming out the return side of the rail?

Thanks, Jayson

Is your FPR stock?

I have not checked the compression yet and yes the FPR is stock. I will check the compression when I check the timing.

Thanks, Jayson :)

As for no fuel coming out of the line. Id check to see if the fpr is clogged or stuck shut. If you have any junkyards by you id go get a used fpr to checl. That 255 that was in there could have.broke the stock fpr. Always with 255 you need a afpr

He had bought an Aeromotive AFPR but had never installed it. I'll check the stock one when I get a chance.

Thanks, Jayson :)

I am going to have to go out to the car and hook up link to tell you. If it would ever stop downpouring I could go out and tell you... LOL

Thanks, Jayson

I would pull the pump and make sure the oring at the top of the pump is sealed to the pickup assembly. If it is torn or out of place, it will flow volume but will not build any pressure.

Thats what I had done. The guy I bought it back from had not installed the assembly correctly back inside the tank. The float that tells you how full your tank is was wedged on the other side of a plastic piece and what not able to function correctly. Since I was already in there, I took the entire assembly apart to check for missing O-rings and I didn't see any that were missing or torn. They all looked good to me.

So does it seem to you if there was not any fuel coming out of the return side of the fuel rail that it would most likely be a lack of pressure problem?

Thanks, Jayson :)

Lack of pressure would be my first guess. The make a gauge that replaces the top banjo bolt in the fuel filter, and the gauge screws into that. I know B&M makes one so it shouldnt be too hard to find. its the same kit for honda civics.

Ok, So I feel like a dumbass. Previous owner had mixed the spark plug wires up and when I thought I had corrected the problem I actually was off one wire. Exchanged the wires to there proper place and finally got it started. Also found the throttle body gasket was on incorrectly and was allowing a lot of un metered air into the intake. Put the gasket on the way it was supposed to be and corrected that problem. The TPS was missing a screw mounting it to the TB and had caused it to shift positions. Pulled a screw off of a spare TB I had and fixed that.

Also found the CC solenoid thingy mounted to the firewall was missing a bolt and practically resting on the TB. Mounted that back and found numerous nuts and bolts and hose clamps resting on the tranny.

All in all, Glad I got it running but I need to do a clean sweep of the engine bay and find out if anything else is missing and figure out where the loose pieces go that I found.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Glad you found the problems. Hopefully there are no more surprises.
