Fuel Gauge only read 1/4 when full

Ok, this has been going on for a while now and i have no idea where to go with this. When i fill up my car (95 eagle talon tsi) the fuel gauge will only go to a little over 1/4 even though the tank is full. Could this be being caused by the float in the assembly that is behind the drivers seat? Is there anything in the fuel pump assembly (the assembly where the fuel pump goes) that the fuel gauge reads off of? If so does anyone know the name for that assembly (behind the drivers seat)? Its driving me nuts as i can never gauge how much fuel is actually in my car. I have replaced the gauge cluster already and it does the same thing on the new gauge cluster.

its possible that someone may have bent the float arm when changing the fuel pump, ive seen that before

My car used to be this way. Turns out whoever replaced the fuel pump had the arm flipped over to the wrong side so it would read all sorts of backwards.

Is the float arm for the sending unit in the FWDs the same as the AWDs? We've got a similar problem with Kyromoto's Fuel Gauge. Never reads above 3/4

Was that pump recently replaced too? Sounds like the same deal.

No, but his fuel gauge never reads full, but his fuel pump is acting up, so we'll be in there soon enough.

Check the float arm. If not, new float arm or assembly depending how it's sold.

When I bought my car it did something similar.

After checking every wire, buying new cluster, etc. I found the previous owner used a worm clamp to hold the 255 pump, and the extra clamp was sometimes blocking the float arm, making the fuel gauge act goofy.


The float potentiometers are known for developing dead spots also.

Yeah. I had the same issue. I'd have a dead spot between 4/10 and 2/10. Sounds stupid to use those types of fractions, but when talking about gauging, it's a big issue.

the other day my car stoped reading over 3/4 full aswell. it worked up until the last 2 fill ups. do i just replace to float assembly, sending unit or what?
