fuel gauge not working

My fuel gauge always reads full, but when i unplug the fuel pump it goes to empty, I dont know if that even matters but if anyone could give me some suggestions on what to look for i'd appreciate it. thanks

The sender arm inside the gas tank is most likely stuck near the top. Has your tank bottom been bashed in?

Actually i checked for that, i removed the pump and made sure the arm wasn't caught on anything when i re-intalled it, and no the tank is not damaged. The car sat for about a month without driving and now the gauge doesn't work.

Either your sender is bad or the yellow sender wire (sender side of connector) is shorting to ground (which would make the gauge read full).

Are your connectors rusty? On my old car I had the same problem and that's what it was. When I cleaned them up and replaced the connectors it started working just fine.
