HI guys,

today when I was going to fill my tank at the gas station I had to change my mind, because the fuel tank door did nothing even related to opening when I pulled the opening lever. I can hear that the cable that goes from the lever to the lid is moving somewhere near the fuel tank, so it hasn't come off of the lever.

What do you think has happened, and how can I open the fuel lid manually? Do I have to separate all the panels in the trunk on the right side to reach the lid mechanism? My Haynes doesn't give any information on this subject.

Oh, and fyi, I'm especially keen on finding the most easy way to solve this, because it's minus 20 degrees celsius outside atm and I don't like the idea of tearing down half of the car just trying to find access to the mechanism. :hmm:

BAd door spring? mine was, remove panels in the car, i used a screw driver to get it open ,always carry tools.LOL. Got a used door and problem solved, good because im painting her when it gets warm.

you could pull the gas lever or have someone pull the lever while you push slightly on the opposite side of the gas door where it opens which is the front part of the gas door and it should open slighty enough to get your finger to open it all the way.

This is what I was going to suggest.
There is a little plastic piece that can come out and then it won't pop open.

Thanks guys, I'll drive the car to a warm parking hall and give this a try tomorrow. Gotta get this solved quickly, 'cause I'm just about to place an order to dsm graveyard and I therefore still have a chance to add for example a new fuel door into it if I need. :D

Thanks sandiballs287, this one did the trick! I noticed that the locking system is working perfectly, the door just won't pop open. I assume the should be a spring somewhere, but where? Could somebody send me a pic of their working fuel door and show me where the spring should be?

The part you are looking for is a plastic clip with metal part that pushes the fuel door open. The plastic part of the clip, eventually gets worn and breaks. I bought 2 new clips from the dealership that lasted a little over a month. I believe they were less than a dollar. I bought a used one from a junkyard and it has worked with no issues for over a year. I even have a spare on in my glove box, I guess they aren't made with the same grade of plastic anymore.

This is the "spring" that you need also showing a spare one. It clips into place. In the meantime you can have someone pull the fuel door open with a fingernail or something as you're pulling the release lever.

i used to take my key out of the ignition and put it between the fuel door lever and the trunk release lever kinda have to jam it in there sometimes to stay but i can open it open by myself!! check inside the fuel door mine was just sitting there after it fell off one time.

I bought my car and someone has ziptied a rubber half circle to where the clip would be, and it works just fine. If I get to the garage soon I will snap a picture. I knew the girl I bought my car from was a DSMer :p

i just fixed mine by jamming the spring onto the door locking mechanism. LOL that hillbilly crap has done well for about 3 years now

does anyone have a part number for the spring? i live near a dodge dealership and they can look up part numbers but if i go in and tell them to look up a mitsu they tell me i cant. asked for an eagle too but there idiots.

My old '86 prelude si would do that. Usually I would stand and pull the fuel door lever with my left, then kick the hinge side of the fuel door with my right foot. Looked ridiculous, but I never deemed it necessary to fix it haha.

thanks for the part #

be nice to be able to do that but the 2g fuel doors are on the passenger side :(

2nd the passenger side door for 2g's. Just another reason I like my 1g, fuel door is on the "normal" side for American cars.

It's also possible to have a hinge that is too corroded to allow the spring to overcome. Nothing that a little lubrication can't fix. I had this same issue with my Talon. I used to wedge my wallet underneath the lever in the car, and then use my credit card to slide in and pull the door open.

searched the part # and just an update it has a superseed part # that is mr970563 incase anyone else wanted to know

yea common sense to me would say the fuel door should be on the driver side just seems to make sense to me anyway.
