Fresh build... Knock problem... Help

So my 4g63 has 1k on it since the rebuild. 1g, 16g, 550cc, 190lph, port/polish, fmic, etc. Doesnt have any kind of tuning tool ex. dsmlink, safc, etc. because its only running on 8psi for now. Also, it only has a narrow band o2 rather than a wideband. so my air/fuel could be off at wot. i dont drive at wot all the time, but have hit wot a few times but never going over roughly 5500-6000rpm.

With that being said, on my way home, i developed a knock at around 2500 to 4k rpm. it seems like it is more prevalent under a load. I am worried that this is a detonation issue and i dont want to jump time and ruin a perfectly good engine. so it just sits. i am literally scared to start it. i nut and bolted everything i could find under the hood, but this is distinctly coming from the engine itself. my question is a)how dangerous is it to drive with a knock like this. b)is there anyway to tell if this is a more major issue like a rod cap, loose internal bolt, etc. c)is it detonation (i have never had a turbo car before and thus a little confused by this). d) what causes knock from detonation


anything you guys can give me would be appreciated. this is my only means to get around right now.

Only superman can accurately tell you what is going on inside your motor.

I am experiencing similiar knock sound, but only under load. Not at idle. I parked mine. Because replacing the basics like (piston rings, main/rod bearings, & some simple machine work) is better than dropping money for a new motor. That's how I feel.

Do you care to get stranded?
Is the knock lighting up the Check Engine Light?
Do you have enough money to replace the entire motor?

Running 550cc injectors, without a way to tune has probably dumped a bunch of fuel into the oil, and damaged a rod bearing, from the diluted oil.

Make sure the knock sensor is in fact a good knock sensor with no leaking goo and that it is properly tightened

If the engine was running that rich, wouldnt there be quite a bit of black smoke?

If it isnt major engine damage, does it just need to be timed again to reduce the knocking?



Also, when the engine was first built, it was built by a highly recommended builder/tuner who specialized in the 4g63 and 420a. The vehicle had an apexi safc, but he said that the car actually ran better with the stock cpu than with the apexi installed.

I think he is talking about an audible rod knock. He has no tuning tools, so its probably not any signal from the knock sensor he is talking about.

would damage to the rod bearings be only audible above 2k rpm? seems like if there was internal damage, that you would get rod knock across the board even at idle. am i wrong?
