you have an automatic tranny... what does it mean when you can launch at 4k rpms just fine, but about 50' down the road all power to the wheels is lost and your "free reving" the engine like you were in neutral, you then let off the petal and after the flywheel drops about 1k rpm the power returns to the wheels and you can continue your launch? It's started to do this with just going 10 mph cruising through parking lots as well, so it's not too much power causing something to slip right? unless somethings just completely lost all friction, however the car does run right most of the time, now that i think about it, this only happens in 1st gear. are first gear and reverse related, due to the fact that it takes 2.5k rpms while in reverse to make the tires move. is this an end clutch or some other clutch issue or the torque converter? any ideas well appreciated.

edit: if i launch in 2nd gear would there be any bad side effects like extra strain? eh just one shouldn't hurt nothing.

thats what i was thinking, but my previous owner specifically said the engine had 45k miles and the tranny was rebuilt in december last year. i just recently replaced the bov on it that was leaking at 6 psi boost so it couldn't of seen anywhere near stock hp levels. either the PO was lying or the rebuild was poorly done. or due to the fact the boost was so weak my PO had to keep it at a much higher rpm to get more power? nah im not sure of the torque range on a 4g63t with only 6 psi on a t25 though LOL. anyway i've wanted a reason to get a 5 speed :D

ok i just did a 2nd gear launch and when i went to throw the shifter in D at 5500rpm it shifted right away and i've never been slammed that hard back before. stupid tcu has no idea when to shift i suppose, but i then repeated it with o/d off and after going into D the tranny got stuch in 3rd until i pulled over and went into neutral then back into D. Then a final pass starting in 1st gear and it shifted perfect... now im back to square one, maybe it's the TCU or possibly the cable but after inspecting it a while back it was just fine. at least hopefully the TC is out of question, if it was shot it wouldn't only do this half the time right?

I was going to say that it sounds like a pressure problem or an electronic problem... bad clutches usually make a grinding noise

btw I love the title to this thread:thumb:

with it being either pressure or electric in mind i found out that when it does slip out now the only way i can get it back into gear is if i put it in park shut off the car and turn it back on. does this mean it's an electric prob? maybe the car thinks the ignition switch gets switched and puts the tranny in park?

So wait? Are you saying you rev it to 5500RPM in neutral then drop it into drive? If so, it's no wonder why your transmission hates you.

The proper way is to put it in drive. Hold the gas AND the brake, then let off the brake and mash the gas at the point where the brakes can't hold it.

But you don't want to keep it revved this way too long, because it will heat up your tranny fluid.

knochgoon24 beat me to it. I'll still say what everyone is thinking. You're a moron. Do a couple more of those neutral drops. I'm sure by the end of the day you'll be posting a thread why it won't shift at all. I'm surprised it didn't grenade yet. :toobad:

A few more question for you now that I think about it:

1. How many miles are on the transmission/car?
2. Have you checked the transmission fluid? (If it's burnt/old/metal flakes/metal chunks)
3. Have you changed the transmission filter? Do you know the last time it was changed?

If you must drive the car and don't have money for a rebuild right now, (and a fluid/filter change doesn't work) I've found that a half bottle of that Lucas Transmission Fix will usually help a bit, but it's only a band-aid. If you use it, you can't do any more neutral drops or launch it too the moon. A tranny rebuild is probably in your near future, so start saving... The Lucas stuff would only be a fix to get you through until you get the money for a rebuild.
