free intake mod

yesterday I was lookin at my air box, and me and a friend decided to try a lil some thing. We pulled the bottom side of the air box off completely and screwed the filter onto the top side of air box. Essentially it still pulls the cool air from the wheel well and has better flow, but I was wondering, as long as the mas wasn't tampered with is this a safe mod to do to our cars? I'll post pics of what I did later.

I actually left mine facing down though because I thought more cooler air would come from below, should I flip it or is that just for asthetics?
