I came across this little article about universal free mods you can do to your car. They're pretty good ideas, most of what I've already heard, but that last one, unplugging the coolant lines to your throttle body and gaining 10 hp? It also talks about the chance of getting an erratic idle afterwards, which DSMs already have enough problems with. I really don't know about this, what do you think about this "free mod"?

Dude, your kidding right. Actually its to speed up the idle in cold weather to help the car heat up. I dont see any way a throttle plate could freeze to the throttle body with all that carbon on the back of it. And for what its worth, if you dont mind a little bit of a weird idle then its not a bad idea at all. Ive done it on all 3 of my DSM's and its always helped out a little. Dont expect to see 10 hp out of it though.
Throttle plates and carburetor butterflies can and have froze during cold weather.

Also, in the summer I've seen my throttle plate "frosty" with a heavy dose of methenol injection. since I've closed off my TB coolant lines. This is an extreme case. But, it does happen in certain conditions (probably long light throttle occasions in cold weather) and it is up to the automotive manufacturer to build an automobile that can be used reliably in most climates.

I may just be an idiot, but I tried to index my spark plugs and I couldn't. It should be just about the easiest thing to do, but I'll tighten the plugs down hand tight, then pop the ratchet on to tighten them so they face the intake mani. Well, one plug just barely worked but another, when it gets hand tight is facing the driver side headlight and then it will only get about as tight to face the exhaust mani. with the ratchet. Am I missing something here???
