I came across this little article about universal free mods you can do to your car. They're pretty good ideas, most of what I've already heard, but that last one, unplugging the coolant lines to your throttle body and gaining 10 hp? It also talks about the chance of getting an erratic idle afterwards, which DSMs already have enough problems with. I really don't know about this, what do you think about this "free mod"?

I doubt you might get 1 more HP. But I can see how that would benifit your spark plug. They would lsat a little bit longer.

The day I take advice from a Honda owner....

Those are all pretty good but I dont know about the MAJOR gains he was seeing with the coolant bypass.

the reason for doing that is because the coolant going to the tb is warm, and removing that line will give just a little bit of more cool air. not much though, no substantial power gains

Ok, that's exactly what I was thinking.....but also, coolant is supposed to cool things down in the engine, so in theory coolant running to the tb would be to keep it cooler. Then again, I also don't really see the tb getting that hot that it would need coolant, which then leads me to ask, why did mitsu. lead coolant to it in the first place if it's just making it warmer?

Blocking off the Coolant lines to the TB is a pretty common thing to do. I have it done to my car and it Idles fine.

Did you notice a difference after you did this?

I beleive its there to protect the throttle plate from freezing in the cold weather. Imagine the destuction, throttle plate is frozen to the tb housing, you press the gas down, there go your throttle lines. The coolant is not there to make it cool down, but to warm it up. Coolant only cools down things that make heat.

The difference is minimal, and coming from a honda guy who probably still thinks his wing gives him about 40 lbs of torque, I would not do this mod.

I do know that indexing the spark plugs is a common practice in almost all race motors, Nascar, drag racing etc. I highly doubt that you would notice a difference in the butt dyno though. MY understanding of the coolant line thing is that for most cars it has to do with emmissions, and idle control, how I dont know.

Yea Honda right?? I am gona try the spark plug thing and see if I makes a difference and I will let my DSM drivers know.:thumb:

HEY! It's that Honda owner! I remember you... LOL... ROFL 10 second Civic right?

I've never heard of these things. Just take my advice and don't touch anything. The issues or problems from the 1 hp which you probably won't feel nor see isn't worth it.

2-3 HP for using sythetic oil?
Hmm I wonder if I use some more synthetic, let's say instead of coolant maybe I can gain more HP.:sneaky:

That's actually a little off, you'll see more like a 4-5 HP gain with synthetic and a 7-8 HP gain with Wal-Mart Super Tech oil.

Yea thats me....hold on wait a minute I sold that car last week for 8grand now I looking for a GS-t or GSX stock to work with the civic was not fun to drive or not as sexy as my n/t sypder soo you do the math dsm or civic??? Back too the real issue here all that other bs that he (the honda guy) is talking about sounds like bs and I can kinda see the point about the spark thing anyways but would they work better if they were facing the intake? Better gas milage maybe? Less spark wear maybe? Forget the 1hp to the wheels!! That you can't feel anyway! The real question is does oil really add that much horsepower to your car???? Let's talk dyno proven here!

the coolant lines are there because of the FIAV. (fast idle air valve).

If you remove the lines, you need to block off the FIAV as well.

That's wal-mart super-tech stuff. I'm talking about the cheap autozone/advanced autoparts stuff :)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH you good! That's why I sold my civic because it's only soo much you can do to it and after a well you see double if you know what I am saying.

Wassup I turned my sparkplugs to face the intake manifold. What I onced right away... A smoother idle, no gas smell exhaust when I did a high rev which I usually smell gas fumes afterwards ,better acceleration, and I believe that's all so if you want try it and give some feed back on it and let me know, I did it on my 4g64.:thumb:

The coolant lines run to the TB to help with cold starts. Also Running 210 degree coolant to your TB is not going to keep it cool.

I did this mod at the same time as a bunch of other things so I can't really comment on the difference.

I capped off my coolant lines to my TB and noticed no increase in power whatsoever.

Yes, this did seam to help my engine rev smoother to redline. . .

Dude, your kidding right. Actually its to speed up the idle in cold weather to help the car heat up. I dont see any way a throttle plate could freeze to the throttle body with all that carbon on the back of it. And for what its worth, if you dont mind a little bit of a weird idle then its not a bad idea at all. Ive done it on all 3 of my DSM's and its always helped out a little. Dont expect to see 10 hp out of it though.
