I had all my belts replaced all my belts about a week ago and on super bowl sunday about a half an hour before kick off while on my way to a party I here the distinct sound of a belt flying apart while sitting at a stop light.

I pulled over popped the hood and sure enough my altinator belt shredded on the right hand side, at the moment it looked like it shredded on the engine mount.

Well I did a few searches on a few forums and last night gathered some info and a friend and I went through the car checked all the pullies including the crank pully and they all seemed fine (also NO END PLAY in my crank WOO HOO :thumb: )

We replaced the belt took the car for a ride and everything seemed ok. Could the shredding of my belt just been a freak occurance?

There you have it, had you read the book you would have known there is a specification given for the pulley centers vs belt deflection. Lemme see, the belt cost you $12 which is cheaper than the $15 book which you didn't have to read. Good thing it wasn't a customer's car, they have a word for that, it's called a comeback which you have to eat. You get 3 of those in a month you get a warning, you get another I'll sign your paycheck.

BTW it was 3/8".

Cheers,

Why are you riding my ass man, lay off. How do you know I didnt have the book. Maybe I was outside in 30° weather. I never claimed to be a mechanic. I ave the DSM CD Manual, Chiltons and Haynes. Customers car??? Man where do you get this stuff. In the other thread you said I was trying to impress you? Who's trying to impress who now?

I'll give you a situation lets see if you can figure it out

Car starts but shortly dies, new battery, new alternator, what would you think?

Turns out there was a broken wire in the loom under the Radiator that gives a 5v signal to the ECU from the ALT. Since the ECU didnt see teh 5v signal then the car would run of the battery and not the alternator. It shorted out and fried the ECU too... wow lookie that. What were you saying about me?

Yeah I hear you, 90 awd. I have the manuals too, but did I sit there, putting a board across my pulleys, put a load on the belt and measure the distance? Hell no! I think most of us generally have a pretty good intuition as to how tight a freakin belt needs to be. I judged mine by feeling how tight the drive belt was, and doing it slightly looser since the book called for a slightly larger distance for the alternator belt.

its not just that.. In another thread he basically told me I was a moron for actually agreeing with him. Since he is suposedly an instructor ASE master mechanic or something he was trying degrade and insult my intelligence and complained about the way I wrote my advice for removing a broken bolt.
