Found my rims....Need help with tire selection for 95 GSX

Hi guys/girls,

I found a nice set of wheels for my 95 gsx. They are 17 x7.5, 5x114.3 bolt pattern, with +35 offset. I need help on finding the right tires to mate these too. This will be a daily driver that will see no track action. My only suspenion mod currently planned is to put the tokico illumina shock/strut/spring kit in the future. I'm thinking either 245/40/17 or 225/40/17?? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

A 225 tire sits flush on an 8" rim.

I would go 225 45 17 or 235 45 17.

I think what you meant to say is that 235 width tires require a minimum wheel width of 7.5 inches. NOT the other way around.

...and since when is tire fitment based on looks.

i got 235's on my 17X7's

I have 35mm offset wheels w/ a 225/45/17 tire. I am lowered on d2 suspension and it sucks. The tires rub on the wheel well, even if I had them rolled it still might rub.
I would go w/ at least a 40 or 42mm offset. What wheels did you choose?

i got 235's on my 17X7's

What I would do on my own car and what I would present as unqualified recommendations to the masses are two very different things.

I assume that when one chooses to use tires that are too wide for the wheel application, the motivation is to have the look of performance without the hassle of purchasing correctly sized wheels. Beyond simply having the looks, significant lateral traction can be gained by using wider tires on properly sized wheels. One of the main reasons a wider tire performs better is that under cornering loads a wider tire will resist the tendency to “pick up” at the thread corners and maintain a more even contact patch. When a wider tire is mounted on a rim that is too narrow, the tendency to round up at the center of the tread and pick up at the corners is increased. This configuration would also provide less support to the sidewalls and be prone to sidewall distortion, further lessening the contact patch.

Wow thanks for all the replies. I went with these wheels...chrome and only $478 shipped on ebay. Will a 215/45/17 tire work as well? I found a deal on a set of falkens for under $400 shipped.

I think the best choice is the first recommendation given by rjennings, 225/45/17. With rolled fender flanges and without getting crazy with lowering and camber correction, you should be fine. 215/45/17's will also fit and have the advantage of more clearance at the fender lip, though you give up some width.

What if you went w/ a 225/45 tire and a 17x7 rim that has a 42mm offset. Do you think it will rub?
