found a Holset HE351VE turbo for $300

In the pacific northwest I don't pay more than $150 for a VGT. I would pay up to $200, but I never see them for sale for that much. I've seen craigslist ads that have 2 or more for sale for $120 a piece. When those go away, H1C and HX35's pop up for a similar price.

Adapting the HE351VE to anything other than the cummins it came on is a big project. I've helped build 2 custom manifolds for them and one was scrapped for the flange before it ran and the other has been a project going on for a year and a half now. I will run one when I feel like I can't go further on the HX-35 I have, and I'll run the HX-35 when I feel I can't go further on my 16g.

There are two threads on DSMtuners by a group of people developing a manifold and a stepper motor controller for the HE351VE.

Should be a link to their manifold somewhere in there. I would start by looking at those and recognize that they are going above and beyond what is needed to make the HE351VE functional. They are creating amazing pieces. IMO they are spending more time developing than creating. The first manifold I made took about a month, but it's not nearly as nice as what they are planning on making.

For me a controller for the stepper motor is not worth while. I think converting it to a pneumatic like the HEXXXV (without the E) series will give a majority of the performance with much less time and R$D into electronics. I'm planning on having the VGT pneumatically controlled off and on like a VTEC, but that's not the optimum solution, just quick and dirty. To get the maximum performance out of the variable geometry technology you do need a programmable stepper motor controller. To get it to make boost and haul ass, you just need to strap it to an engine. That requires a manifold adapter and plumbing, still not a bolt on and go project. If you want that, you should be looking at the forced performance website, they have great turbos that go right in.
