For those thinking about blacking out your taillights...

how tinted are your lights, mine were way to dark so i removed all the paint and started over, 2 coats of night shades and 4 coats of clear made a much better smoked look. Reflectors are still very visible and easy to see. I was more worried about someone rear ending me cause they didnt see my lights well during the day and then it would be my fault because i had illegal tails. in my opinion a smoked red look looks way better than a blacked out look.

I had it done for 4 years on my black 2gb TSi. Never once had an issue with the cops.

here is a new image from round 2 of doing the tint, i finally got the right clear coat. this one is a high gloss clear.

still need to buff and polish them!

It just kinda looks like your lights are dirty. the "smoked" look IMO looks dumb.

I tried the smoked look at first but then i just ended up blacking them out completely.

right around 4 or 5 should do the trick^ They seriously don't give a shit in Alaska though. And you could see my tail lights fine when they were on

Please don't black out your Tails.. it looks tacky and trashy. I haven't seen a good looking one yet. Not to mention it does affect people behind you who can barely see your break lights/blinkers when you try to stop during the day...

I think it is just perfect when you get it so your car doesn't have that reflective amber/red showing and it has a nice shinny coat of smoke to it. When its blacked out it looks like a typical ricer mod.

I also don't really care for the look, it's really tacky and takes a lot of contrast out of the look of your car and makes it look bland. But if that's the look you want, go for it. In my opinion if you're gonna do it, at least get it done professionally.

With how dark my tails are, I have not have a problem with the popo. You can still see them in the day time and night time. Day time is a little hard when the sun is glaring in your eyes, but other than that, I also have the brake light on my spoiler in which helps too I would imagine.

heres my 2gb talon i used vht nighshades and left the reverse lights white :)

i like the way they looked blacked out but in my opinion there is no need to add a reason to the list of things to get pulled over for especially on a sports car which a cop will already be looking at as you drive by... also don't black out the reverse lights unless you like backing into things might as well just remove them completely if your gonna do that

I hate blacked out. I had it for a while, I wanted smoked or red. Not black. Smoked looks good.

This was acheived by using Krylon Staind Glass Red. Found at any hobby shop like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

I've also used the new Rustoleum Lense Tint... I highly suggest spending the extra cash on VHT.

MetalCast Smoke (Cheapest, goes on light if you only wanna smoke or lightly tint. If you wanna go darker you'll have to do a lot more coats or use something else)

VHT NiteShade (Most Expensive but goes on thicker. Easy to screw up but if your competent you can achieve great things with it)

Rustoleum Lens Tint (Middle of the two on price, unless your clever and switch the price sticker from a different can LOL, Goes on EXTENSIVELY dark. If you hold the can further away in attempt to go on lighter it will make a matte type of film which is rough. Only way to get it glossy is to follow the directions but then it will be instant black! Be Careful with this stuff! Also the shading, may look good without the lights on but when you turn the lights on, you'll see it. Looks like specs of dark matter LOL. The Mixture perfect. I don't like this stuff!)

The rest of the can of Rustoleum is going to be used in painting a bumper LOL.

My personal opinion. Metal Cast for Smoking a lens, VHT for blacking it out! Trust me! I've done tons of tails.
