I saw a pic (may have been here?) where somone with a 2g eclipse blacked out their tail lights so the entire a$$ end was completely black aside from the license plate. It looked really cool and I was wondering how it was done and whether the brake lights still work properly...like would it still be red (red bulb?) or is this just for show cars. thanks

Nah, they'd still light up properly. There's a product called VHT niteshades that serves as a spray on tint. Rumored to be sold at autozone.

I actually went to 5 different stores today and no one had them.

so just spray this niteshade paint on and it still lights up red? Would this work for the headligths too?

DSM taillights are bright to begin with (compared to others) so you will be ok. The cops haven't gotten me yet and it has been three months. Don't do the headlights because that is illegal, and the shit it hard to get all the way off. If you want headlight blackouts, just buy some plastic blackouts. The stuff is sold for roughly $11 at www.jegs.com .

There's almost no way you'd get pulled over at night for having tinted taillights, you can barely notice that they're even tinted at night because the light still passes through them like normal... during the day is when I'd be worried about getting ticketed :p You can still see the reflectors and brake lights during the day, but cops don't seem to like it either way.

I used niteshades on my car and it looks awesome. This is the second car i have owned thati have done that to. I also have smoked my front bumper lights, i did a nissan Altima, VW golf and a couple of others. None of us have every been pulled over for it. You just can't go and put like 10 coats on the lights. I suggest 2 coats and at least 2 coats of clear after a nice wet sand. Check out my gallery for some pics or PM me with any ?'s.

why would smoked tails be illegal? stock rx-7's come with smoked tails
It would be illegal because I have about 8 coats on my taillights and you cannot see any red. They still light up perfect at night.

how does this paint effect the reflectors in the taillights? I was wondering perhaps I should do one light coat of the stuff and then mask the reflectors off and then go back and put a couple more coats on. Think that would look good or would it look stupid? My main concern, even if it is legit, is that if someone rear ends me or something and I try to sue them that some idiot judge will rule that if I didn't have my reflectors blacked out they might of been able to see me and stop. BS of course but some of these judges are morons. Oh also did you do anything special to prep the lights, should I use something special to clean them or would glass cleaner work fine?

I washed them and put rubbing alcohol on them, then painted. I figure, I still have my third brake light which is bright as day, plus they passed inspection...somehow.

well I just did it. I think it looks pretty good dark enough but not dark enough to warrant attention from police. How long should I wait before I spray the clear coat?

i had mine "frosted" white tint on my pearl white dsm and no mechanic would pass it for inspection so i had to take it off with brake fluid it looked so badass, i sent firebretha a pic of it

holy shit!!!, thats exactly what i want to do to mine...you say that all you used was that vht spray stuff??? im sold!

what woudl be the diffrence in using this spray on your head lights over getting the plastic covers??? if you have stock driving lights installed you would still have a legal unobstructed source of light at night? just my 2 cents

Well, it still reflects light, and during bright sunlight still looks like a really dark red/mahagony (sp?) color. I think legally, it has to be able to reflect light, as opposed to just being able to shine through. Which is why it's better than the covers (which doesn't allow headlights from the rear to be reflected.)
