I am somewhat new to the dsm community, however I was looking for everyones feedback on lightned flywheels vs the stock flywheel. I just recently pulled out the tranny from my awd 99 eclipse to replace the synchros. Once i got the tranny the pressure plate was exposed and made me curious what condition it was in. Anyways I endind up pulling out the pressure plate clutch and flywheel. The pressure plate and clutch are from act and appear to be in good condition as the same with the flywheel. Mainly I was curious about everyones feedback on these parts mainly the flywheel as it appears to be very heavy. If i dont get a pressure plate i will just throw everything back on. However if I get a lightened flywheel ill go ahead and replace the pressure plate and clutch as well with a 6 puck or something. Any feedback on this adventure would be greatly appreciated. Is is worth the money to go with a lightened flywheel such as a fidanza 8lb, 11lb? Or in an awd car should i just stick with the stocker? Thanks everyone :dsm:

I have Fidanzas in both my 95 & 98 AWDs, I love them - there are no downsides at all from my perspective, other than the 95 ECU code can have a hard time stopping the engine from stalling when it drops from high rpm. I have never drag raced, so I have no idea what effect a 7lb flywheel would have there, other than logic suggests it should make the launch more challenging.

I am getting a used 91 TSI AWD and the guy I am getting it from says I will need a new clutch, so I am planning on possibly getting a lightened flywheel since I will have the tranny open anyway, so I am curious to know what everyone thinks about a lightened flywheel as well.

I have a buddy that has an 8lb flywheel on his prelude, and he was telling me that when he shifts into second or third you will notice the rpms drop more vs with the stock flywheel, when releasing the clutch. He said this is because the lighter flywheel does have the mass to carry the rpms to the next gear. However he did note that while in any gear the rpms rev quicker, if that makes any sense. I guess i can understand that. Im still curious if this is something i should by since i have everything apart especially on an AWD car. If anyone has used one these, please post some feedback. Thanks

Both our 1g and 2g AWD DSMs have fidanzas in them, and I can't imagine driving a dsm without one anymore. It took a great deal of retraining on my part to get used to; you'll need a much higher launch RPM (along with good clutch control), and the engine winds up and down MUCH faster, requiring good throttle control. Basically, you need to learn to be more delicate with both the clutch and the throttle.

Is it worth the money? Depends. If you're a drag racer, probably not. But it's on my list of required upgrades for autocross.

I see, thanks alot for the info. I am probably going to go with just a slightly lighter one since i have everything apart. Especially since im going with a new clutch and pressure plate as well. Any one else please feel free to add opinions. :dsm:

I would think the ACT would be pretty good for what your looking for because its slightly lighter then stock. I chose the CM flywheel and I think that might be too light after picking it up. We'll find out as soon as I install.

Awesome thanks im still looking in to what brand i should buy for a clutch and pressure plate. I had an act 2600 and it wasnt disengaging completely and it wore out my tranny...I am definetly getting the fidanza...I dont really know all the weights they offer but im still looking into it.
