Hey guys, my buddy was just comming into school today and then he said his engine blew right as he was pulling into the parking lot, a big ass 6ft flame came out the exhaust and he couldnt go more than 5mph. The exhaust was glowing red. What could this be? hes got a 95 tsi awd.

Could be that the cat. Converter was severly clogged that's why it would be glowing red or if he was upshifting (4-3-2-1) at a high rpm it could've sent unburnt fuel down the exhaust and reacted with the clogged cat which was red hot.

No, my engine didn't blow. I downshifted to 2nd and heard a loud clunk right before this started happening. It won't accel. pass 3500rpms and usually dies at idle or idles at 100rpms. After 10mins of driving, internally the muffler would become bright orange and shoot out a 6ft. flame. Also have a massive exhaust leak now.

wow, really sounds like your timing slipped a tooth. check that first IMO. change the belt while you are in there. one of my friends did a downshift similar to yours , but his belt slipped a few too many teeth and he lost many valves. Be careful, good luck.

To me it sounds like u either the uicp or lower intercooler piping broke on you and the ecu recompinsated from teh lean mixture becuase of the blow pipe and mad u run rich as hell wich is what might have caused the flame

It sounds similar to what happened with my engine when I chipped a valve. Check your timing to start and keep us updated.

Gee, I may be the only one, but I think that is a strange diagnosis. Now, to hear that you say that's actually what happened and when repaired the problem went away seems even stranger. I thought I knew enough about cars to call this diagnosis a slim chance at best. I'm going to pull the BS flag on this until someone else can explain it to me in enough detail to help me understand.

I retract the BS flag and put my tail between my legs, all it takes is a simple explanation to fix me. Pardon the original post, good diagnosis. I'm glad to have learned something else today. Thanks. Glad your car's repaired too.
