i was cruisin around last night and saw a 2g eclipse drivin around and he floored it then left off the gas and a huge flame came out of the exhaust. why is this? running to rich or to lean? Heavily modded? too much back pressure? ive heard stories of flame coming out but never have actually seen it. just wondering what causes this

Running too rich can do this. It causes unburnt fuel to puddle in the exhaust, which ignites when more oxygen is available, causing a backfire.

There are also "flamethrower kits" which are designed to cause flames in the exhaust... they are for show for the FnF wannabes.

no i think it had a kit on there it would do it in spurts. sometines they would be big and then small.

Heavly modded dsms do this. My old first gen did this when I shifted inbetween gears and BLAM! OMG 2 foot flame would shoot out. It is pretty much of rich mixtures. But ive heard that you want to be slightly rich when at wide open throttle for saftey reasons.

with my ignition advanced but the carbs set rich I would get little backfire pops and flames out of the old MGB...
you need to not have a cat for it to happen though.

I think I have a hevily modded car, and it has never done that. I wish it would. well thinking about it. it did do it once when on hard acceleration the alternator belt broke. but in my opinion it would be really nice if my car did it when shifting gears.

my supra with a t88 does it in between shifts and so does my 60-1 tsi, it usually happens to me on race gas tho, no matter how much i lean my car out b4 it gets the point of detonation,it still shoots out big azz flames,

Oh yeah - venting the BOV on a draw-thru MAF setup can cause backfiring between shifts....

hahah you guys are crazy . I can understand a small backfire pop but you make it sound like a flame throwing ! ROFL ROFL

Mine has occasionally when I smack into the revlimiter.

My buddy lit his cigarette via the flames from my exhaust. Not the brightest idea but it sure is cool :sneaky:

im not being crazy. One time racing a mustang I hit the rev limiter and the exaust (witch I had coming out the side) shot 2 feet and lit up the whole under chasis. thats when the mustang new what he was messin with and had this look on his face--> WTF

everytime i shift at higher rpms, i get 3ft + flames out the back....what i found interesting though, is that i get flames out of my external wastegate every once and a while under full throttle.....anyone ever hear of this happening before, it was cool at first, but then it melted a good section of my front bumper LOL

i thought that it had something to do with the CAT. If you don't have one then ur more prone to shooting out flames. i could be wrong though....

Kinda reminds me of Kramer when he tried to light his cigar on the stove with it [cigar] in his mouth.

And for that white 2g, he is a member here. There was a thread about it in the vid section.

that was actually the wrong vid I posted but theres one with the same car and u can see the backfires
