My name is Houston, fairly new to this forum. Im 17 as of June.
Ive been here maybe a month, but ive only looked around.
My dad owns a customs garage, custom painting cars and such.

I have found a completely stock 95 Eclipse RS Auto for $1500 with 130k Miles.
All I plan on doing is building it for show competitions, maybe add a few more hp and make it sound good, but mainly for show. I have a 07 Cobalt, so having another car to drive is not a problem. Anyways, my question is would it be fine if I bought this eclipse, built it for shows, and then somewhere down the line swap it to a manual? Can someone give me a figure on how much it would be in parts? No labor, we can do it ourselves. And how long would it take to do this, say if I had nothing else to do. ex work, school, ect.
Ive searched around but found no price figures.

One last thing, with me being a senior in high school, im picking colleges right now. Does anyone recommend Wyotech, UTI, or Northwestern Ohio? and why?

Great idea, expect that price to go up though, they usually don't sell that cheap. There are more write ups for a swap on the 4G63 auto to manual than there is the 420A. VFAQ even has one on there which is step by step.

As for schools, I think wyotech sucks. I have had so many friends go there and they could have taught their teachers a thing or 2 it was that easy. Reason being I never went. I guess it wouldn't be bad if your just getting into cars but your better off to go to a real tech school such as Lincoln Tech or something along those lines to get your money worth.

Please make sure it is in decent condition. I understand your making a show car and every inch to every detail is not left out. The better the condition the less headaches. $2500 sounds like too many things are wrong with it. But hey, you never know. A link to it, please?

I would advise against buying a car off of eBay, for the most part that seems to be the dumping grounds for junked up cars that in most cases have a ton wrong with them. Every now and then you find a diamond in the rough for a really good price. Be patient, if your going to buy something to turn into a show car you want a good base to start with. A nice 2g can be had for around $2500 or less if you keep your eyes open and are ready when you find the right deal. An RS is a good choice for cosmetic mods but if its rotted out you'll spend more time doing body work and probably engine work than you will anything else.

thats what my dad says. hes like "I think you should just wait around and get a higher end model."
do we have any 18-20 year olds that pay their own insurance? where do you live and how much are you paying?

Yes sir. Im 18, working two jobs, and im a full time student at the local community college, paid all by me. I pay for my car insurance also. I pay 300 for full coverage in louisiana and I had an rs. Your going to hate it. Not only is it not visually satisfying, no side skirts, drum rears, no sunroof, the power plant sucked. Hahaha. My insurance did not go up A DIME when i went from N/t to my gst...Call your insurance company.

I went to Wyotech in Blairsville, PA. It's a good school and u can learn alot but the thing that suck sometimes is that they teach at a fast pace and the day feels long as hell. You have a choice of either day or night classes. I went to day classes which were from 7am-4:15pm. You have to be clean shaven everyday and have ## hair short which annoyed the hell out of me. ( i had long hair with cornrolls) The school campus has a few different courses which is Auto(6month), Collison(6months), High performance Engines & Chassis Fab(3months), Streetrod(3months). ASM is also another class but i don't think it's really worth it, it's a business managing class for if u want to open a shop but a lot of ppl found it to be a waste of time and $. There's is also Trim&Upholstry(i think 3months).
Since i left they built a Diesel building and SUPPOSELY added a Tuning course (don't know how true this is).
Some of the things i didn't like about the school, is that it was too american based, they talked more about v8s and push rod engines and not so much about DOHC engines. They also aren't to big on Turbo's either because alot of the instructors are more into american muscle. But it might of changed and hopefully got more instructors that dealt with imports. They did agree TURBO is Better than Supercharge though.
OH and night classes supposely is a lil better because they are not so strict. I Recommend that if do decide to go, that u Definitely sign up for Auto, High Perfomance Engines &Chassis fab, and Streetrod. It's also important that u know it is extremely boring out there. Well atleast for me because i live across the river from nyc(way more urban) and went a more rural area.

If you got any Question about the school shoot me a PM and i'll gladly let u know anymore info i know.

yeah im in the process of getting insurance quotes from different companies.

@side_show - yeah i would be taking high performance, auto, streetrod, not sure bout trim and upholstery. where did you hear about the tuner course tho?just curious

damn i forgot, i think it was one of kids that went to the school after i did, that lives by me. Oh another thing i forgot to say was that there was some other lil course that some guy by there was offering. It's called Powerhouse, he was a really good engine builder\machinist if i remember right. You should go call the school and go thru their tours b4 u decide. I did the tour after i signed up though, but it gives u an idea of how the place is. Oh and when\if u take high performance save money so u could use it for ## project. My car got messed up so i had to waste all my money on it and never got to do what i wanted and just ended up trying to build a tubebender which i never finished. Oh u also learn how to mig\tig weld in that class don't know if i mentioned that. Also all classes have Three instructors.
