Trans finally just gave out on me I think. Was trying to make it last until I made the move to my new house but I dont think this is an easy fix. I understand the basics of a manual trans, but have a question.

Basically my trans is stuck in either 5th or 3rd gear. Im thinking its 5th. Whats weird about it is, the clutch still works fine(dis engages the trans) and the shifter will go through all the gears while the car is running but wont actually change the gear. I had my wife run through the gears with the car off and watched the shift linkages under the hood. Everything looks fine there, every gear moves the linkage and shifters on the trans like they should.

What actually broke inside the trans?

Well if this tells you/yall anything more. If the car is running, I can switch through all the gears but if i put it in any gear other then 3 or 4th the car wont move. If I put it in 3rd, 4th or neautral I can take off and drive. If I put it in 1st 2nd 5th or reverse the car is stuck and wont move at all?

Also if im driving I can put the shifter in 3rd and 4th. Wont let me put it in any other gear.

You likely broke the 3/4 shift rail. So you're stuck in one of those two gears. Reason you go into either would be shifter moves but it's not actually moving the rail inside. The fork never moves and it's in gear. 1/2, 5/r are likely still workign and if you put is in one of those then your'e in two gears. Take the 3/4 detent bolt out and look at the rail to see if it moves. Shifter alone doesn't tell you that the rail is moving.
