Anyone foresee any problems with running a filter directly on the turbo? What size filter would I need to fit on a EIII 16g?

why would you want to do that so you can suck hot air right off of the exhaust manifold, plus what are you going to use to meter air flow

i see your running maft so scratch that, but id recomend against it you get cooler air from not sucking off the exhaust manifold

I've seen it and there shouldn't be any issues. Heat is the only concern but I expect you are already well aware of that and you can make whatever adjustments you need. A heat shield would be very helpful.

Some guys skip the filter and just run screen material on the inlet for some really badass restriction free power but I'm sure you're also aware of the drawbacks of the limited filtering abilities of that material.

A screen isn't restriction free. You have the square area of the turbo inlet at that point, which is maybe 7 in^2 if your lucky. Or you run a huge cone filter with a square surface area of 100 in^2. Which would you prefer to run?

I ran 12.3 with a 3" filter right off the turbo.. untuned.

When I tuned the car I snapped my driveshaft and blew my rear end out.

This was on a 50 trim and pump gas.

Intake temp doesn't matter that much on turbo cars as it shoots up to 300* at the turbo. That is why you need to size your intercooler properly.

Mork,

Yeah, I was just messing with you, I knew what you were originally refering to.
To do the off the turbo thing, I agree would require some very effective heatshielding. The radiation coming off that area is just brutal even with stock heat shielding, last thing I'd want to do is slap an airfilter right there. The difficulty in providing extra shielding isn't worth it over simply running 12-24" of extra intake tubing. And there is some ramtuning advantage having a long pipe feeding the turbo.

If your running speed density then go for it, just be sure your intercooler is sufficient and look in to making a heat shield to help keep some of that hot air away from the filter :rocks:
