When im in first or second gear at about 2.5k or 3k rpm, i here this weird noise coming somewhere from the engine bay. Ill describe the noise as someone dragging a chain made of plastic across concrete. Its a quiet noise but tends to get louder if i stay in the same gear yet climb the RPM's. But it dissapears after high rpms or in 3rd/4th/5th gear. There is one factor to look at here, my turbo is indeed shot. There is alot of shaft play now, im only getting about 5-7 PSI of boost for a split second or 2 but then it instantly drops to 0. Also, oil in exhaust and its been smoking badly. The turbo seal is broken...ive had the mechanic who installed my new engine confirm that the turbo was shot. But as i await the new turbo i can hear the turbo whine in exactly the same exact RPM everytime. But this chain noise, could it be the turbo making weird noises?? I dont know what else to describe this weird noise as...i would kinda call it a rattle but i dont think its coming from the exhaust/downpipe..cause my 3" turboback is brand new and was just put on a few days ago. Any thoughts?

well when i had a noise coming like that i just figured it would go away. bad idea. ended up my car shut off on the highway, which is never fun, and the noise was me spinning a rod bearing. took the car to a mitsu dealership and they had the car for 2 weeks and had to put 2 different engines in it. the first new engine they put in, i didn't even get the car back. on the test drive they took it on, that engine spun a rod bearing. that's my experience with a similar noise. hope it isn't that way for you.

wow sorry to hear that man. The noise im talking about is more of a rattle, like an exhaust rattle but i dont think its coming from the exhaust. This noise im talking about, ive heard many cars on the road have this type of noise when accelerating. I just dont know what it is. I know what a bottom end knock sounds like man, thats what happened to me 2 months ago and after the mechanic going through 2 different engines (cause they had different sensors 95-96), i finally ended up with this one which is supposably a 25k miles 99GST engine that i had to search for. This noise is nothing compared to the noise of my rod bearing spinning in my last engine before it said bye bye.

I'm hearing the same noise in my car as well. Its a 96 GSX but 82k on it. Still Bone stock since I haven't been able to really drive it for obvious reasons.

Back to the problem. I'm hearing the noise when I accelerate. I have an auto; so I dont really pay attention to the RPM's. I thought it was my muffler too, but I know its not that. So has anyone came up with an answer for what this could probably be? I don't want to bring it to a mech until I have too, because I only going to be able to drive it for 2 weeks before I leave to go to Kuwait.

hey man how come you are never online anymore... did you ignore me or something on aim? hit me up sometime man. my sn is still the same. araknid01

If the seals in the turbo are shot, pull the intake to check compressor housing and see if the blades have been making contact. As the seals degrade, it's logical to assume that shaft play (in and out) is increasing and the blades are chewing themselves to bits each time you boost it.

I am having the same exact problem in my 96 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. My wastegate will not close completely, so I am thinking that this sound is definitally a turbo problem. Especially after reading people are having similar noises and know they have a bad turbo. I am hoping to replace the turbo soon, so I'll let you guys know if thats the problem or not.
