Exhaut Temp Sensor Install

I'm looking to get an Exhaust Temp Sensor, but am wondering how to install the probe. Do you just drill a hole in the number 1 runner on the manifold and make threads in it and what size do you make the hole and threads? Is this common and do alot of people do this? I'm also guessing that I would have to take the turbo off so I wouldn't get metal shavings in the turbo, right?

drill hole and tap it. on a dsm im not sure bout pulling the turbo. When i worked for a cummins performance shop we would start the motor and drill the manifold any shavings would usually blow out past the bit .

Alright, I'm just worried about getting metal in through the turbo. Has anyone tried this and not messed up their turbo on a DSM? And is there any specific distance away from the cylinder head that you should make the hole?

I personally would never do it with the engine on and running, or with the manifold on the car at all, but that's just me. You need to drill the hole 5" down from the top stud on the number one runner. I'm not sure what size right off hand, but just use your head and start small working your way up. Once you have the temperature probe you will see what you have to do and what size hole you need.

Do you have have a wideband? If you don't I would get that first over an EGT.

My autometer EGT sensor uses an 1/8th NPT fitting just like the Greddy. They note the drill bit size in that write up posted above but when you by the tap for 1/8th NPT it should also tell you what size bit to use. You can also check vfaq.org for a nice write up on how to install an EGT. Hope this helps!

Yes. The shavings will be small as long as you start with a small bit and work your way up. With the engine idling they will just blow through the turbine housing and/or out the hole.

And is there any specific distance away from the cylinder head that you should make the hole?

It might depend on the brand of probe/sensor you're using.

No I don't have a Wideband, I was going to get EGT instead, but I did see an Autometer for $230, I think I'll probably do that.

Where did you get you Autometer EGT Guage?

I purchased my EGT guage from the classifieds here and the probe from ebay. I personally would buy the wideband first, there are used ones on here all the time if youre on a budget. The wideband will offer a better idea of what is happening inside the engine. What are you using to tune with? Purpose for needing the monitoring device?

In my opinion, I would def take the manifold off & use a work bench to drill & tap the hole. This way you know for sure no metal shavings will get into the turbine & eff it up. That's what I did.. better to do it right than chance taking the risk ya know...

For EGT? Its 1/8 npt
