Exhaust to keep cops happy in Virginia???

I recently got a ticket for exhaust. I didnt have money to pay for the ticket so I just got a stock muffler from a friend and welded it up. I have been trying to figure out a way to get around the law but still have a loud exhaust. When I went to court to show the pictures of the stock exhaust all he needed to see was that it wasnt that big ass 4 inch muffler I had before. Does anyone know if leaving that stock muffler in place and making a stealthy side exit is "legal"? Or maybe someone has been in the same situation and knows a way around it? Someone has got to know something. Thanks guys,

An exhaust cut out, then with a flick of a switch you could switch from the stock exhaust to a dump right from the down pipe if that floats your boat.

If you drive an import you will get exhaust tickets, bottom line. I have gotten exhaust tickets for OEM exhausts as well. I get them dropped when I go to court but it's just one of those things you have to deal with. If you drive an "import" or "sport compact" car in Va you are pretty much giving up your freedom as the cops have the ability 100% within the law to harass you as much as they want, using laws that allow them "discretion". You will get pulled for exhaust whether it's stock or not, as their probable cause for imposing on your freedoms.

I can't find the thread I was reading a couple of days ago. There was a muffler that someone had purchased from New Zealand or something like that, that was a dual tip muffler. One side acted like a normal 3" muffler and the other side had a cut-out with a switch that made it a straight through exhaust. I hope that helps some.

wow you guys really have to deal with this kinda crap from the cops??? i feel bad i even have my cat removed in my honda!!! no joke so we were tunnin the evo in the interstate 3 days ago. and we were doin a third gear pull we got pulled over!! cops like your tunnin on AEM EMS????? i was like ugh....yeah? to my surprise cop happens to be a big IMPORT fan! no ticket....just a Warning not to do it in public roads ...FYI we were goin atleast 98mph on a 60mph road i guess it just depends what are your in..

Have a pencildick stock exhaust and have a cutout somewhere hidden under the car, fab up a 3" DP into a gutted stock looking cat, and have the cutout blow down from inside the cat. That's about as stealth as you can get eh?

Thanks guys. Yea here in Va. they really are a PITA about imports. Domestics can be shaking buildings but its ok as long as you got a V8. I want to do a cutout very bad but dont have a welding machine. Anyone near danville Va. want to help me fab everything up???

If all else fails you could always report 6 or 7 crimes several miles from where you plan on driving, that'll solve your problem. Just kidding, you could just run an exhaust with two resonators and a dump so you wont have a visible exhaust.

on my beater I have added resonators along with the use of a stock muffler and I still get pulled for it. It doesn't matter. An import sports car in Va WILL get pulled over for exhaust, no matter how quiet or stock it is.

I get a exhaust ticket 50% of the times I leave my neighborhood in my red car.

If you have a stock exhaust and a cop gives you a ticket, you have the right to fight it. I would sue the whole city over that type of Harassment. You have to Cause a BIG scene...Call the local News people and tell them how you are Unfairly treated.

I just picked up a stock exhaust, cat to muffler and im gonna get a 3" electric cutout and put it right in front of the Cat, so ill have a 3" turbo to cutout so it will be either full stelth or open DP ...

The secret I found is staying away from big shiny mufflers.
I have a full 3" exhaust on my GSX with a Borla XR1 muffler. It is somewhat loud, but the muffler and tail pipe are painted black and it has never been noticed after being pulled over several times.

It is also based on the area and the cops you get. Up north here Fairfax is the worst. I also send letters to my state representatives because VA has been in talks of passing a decibel based law for years. The reps just need constituents to support it. A perfect example is how quickly the civil penalty law got overturned when voters got in an uproar.

good way to garauntee getting searched. A buddy of mine has a concealed permit and he now gets searched every time. Before he got his permit he never got searched.
