Exhaust question

So apparently my cat is welded to my catback, yes literally welded. I've been thinking about getting a catback but if i do does this mean I'd either have to buy a new cat(which im not doing) or get a test pipe and a catback? If/when i go with a test pipe, how many of you put on a cat for emissions and then put on the test pipe afterwards? I dont think i'll have a big problem with emissions but im definately not buying another cat just for a catback. Does that make sense

You can take a Sawsall and cut the pipe on the weld joint then have flanges welded onto the Cat and the catback pipe. This would allow you to easily put a test pipe in place later down the road. The difficulty depends on how recently your exhaust system has been taken apart and amount of rust involved with the hanger bolts.

I don't think taking the test pipe off once every 1 to 2 years is that bad personally. And then just putting it right back on when the test is done... I wouldn't mind it.

You could always take the original cat and weld the outside portion to your test pipe so it looks like a cat. haha. In my state they just do a visual inspection to make sure you have the cat so that would work here.

Or just get a high flow cat but they can be kinda pricey. But then you don't have to worry about taking it on and off. Does it perform as well? no. Is it easier? yes. Is it more expensive? yes.

Just a couple options for you but I think the first is the best... IMO.

I would just swap test pipe in and come good ol smog swap cat back in

Yeah where i get my inspection done i can almost guarantee he could care less if i dont have a cat haha I'm just thinking more about the most practical idea, but it's something to think about.
