exhaust question

They are different configurations. FWD doesn't need to avoid the rear axle configuration. If you on a budget many people have done an impressive system for like 300-400. But it takes some fabrication. I just got a beginners kit from JNZ tuning and picked the 3" Megan's racing cat back along with a walbro 255AWD and auto meter boost gauge all for like 550ish I got more stuff like an air fuel pressure regulator too. Anyway good luck.

i am looking online at exhaust systems. in some of the descriptions it says "fwd" and in others it says "awd". would the "awd" still be compatible on a fwd car?

Not for an exhaust, some other parts it may not matter.

But they do need to get past the suspension, especially on a 1G with a solid 'axle', i know i built one from hand for my ex-roommates 90NT using bends and straight pipe.

If you can weld, this is THE best kit to get, hands down MITSUBISHI TK.

Road Race Engineering might still have 1g bolt on cat backs. Give them a call. The other option is to have one made. Try using mandrel bends instead of muffler shop press bent stuff.

I don't know what your level of competency is with auto mechanics is but if your just getting started I would get a simple bolt on exhaust. Looking at your info you have a 1G FWD so you need to find an exhaust that is made for your 1990 1g FWD the hangers and path is different than let say my 1991 1G AWD.

You could make one cheaper if you have the skill set and tools. I got a quick bolt on Megan Racing one because I wanted a cheap simple solution.

i know the basics about auto mechanics. no knowledge about dsm though at all

I had a really simple side exhaust set up on my 1g. Most of the tubing is straight and one 90 degree bend so it exits right before the rear tire. The rear axle makes running a decent sized exhaust a pain.
