hey guys i just bought a 97 GST and i need some info.. whoever last owned it cut a hole in the stock exhaust manifold and added a pipe that went to and external wastegate/dump and did an awful leaky job.. my question is what exhaust manifold do i need to do it the right way.. i would like to go with a stainless header with a wastegate flange.. what do i need? i have no idea since i am new to all of this... im not exactly sure what turbo is in it other than the case says TD05H on it.. thanks

i could but the manifold is old and rusted and just not very attractive as i would like to make it as neat and clean as possible for shows also.. thanks anyone else?

We would need alot more infomation. What type of turbo, what type of wastegate.

Update your info. it doesent even say what year car you drive, or what type for that matter.

Congrats on the new purchase.
If you have plans to do this correctly then lets start off with the exhaust manifold. I would look at www.slowboyracing.com and buy their SBR Manifold with external wastegate also on turbo cars we don't use headers :p so forget the stainless headers.

Like IslanderTsi said, update your vehicle profile because we need to know the size of the wastegate, is it 38mm? If so then SBR would work great for you. I know you already stated the year, turbo type and your problem. It just makes it easier for everyone if you fill out the vehicle profile :thumb:

I agree with you about the vehicle info but if you re read his post it says..
97' GST, TD05H Turbo but does not mention the size of the wastegate.

sorry guys i just bought this car and dont know much about them.. it has a HKS external wastegate and i have no idea what size it is or how to measure what size it is.. i see they are calculated in mm, is it the size of the opening into the gate? as far as the turbo i have no idea what size it is all i know is that the housing has TD05H on it and from reading on here that housing is used in more than one turbo..

Don't worry, I got you cover :thumb: . Your HKS wastegate could be a 50mm or 60mm, click on this link and see which one matches your wastegate http://www.slowboyracing.com/shop.php?sid=&cat=1149

Here is another link that could get you to the right track of which wastegate you have
http://www.sportcompactonly.com/product.aspx?p=101071&c=100026&l=2

Then call up SBR and see if they can custom the wastegate on their SBR Ex. Manifolds to fit your HKS 50mm or 60mm wastegate. The SBR manifolds are made for your turbo (7cm size) Don't get a t3/t4 style manifolds because does won't bolt up to your current turbo.

Hope this helps

alright so heres the problem... i know somewhat how the whole wastegate+manifold+o2 housing should be arranged but its set up totally different than anything ive seen.. it has the stock exhaust manifold and stock 02 housing.. the external wastegate is connected to a pipe that was welded into the top of the exhaust manifold and then the dump before the wastegate dumps back into the exhaust after the o2 housing... so my question is how can i do this with a new stainless exhaust manifold? and also is there any benefit as to how they did this setup? or is it just cheap and bassackwards? thanks

I know exactly how the setup is. It looks ghetto but you can hide it JMF heatshield to make it look nicer. You said your leaking though so fix the leaks and if you want you can replace the ex. manifold and o2 housing. I'm sure the leaks is coming from the welded area which probably has a few cracks. Best way to avoid that is to buy a manifold that already has a external option or you can weld that area again but i'll leak eventually.

The setup is arranged fine, just poorly done. I'm not sure if they make stainless ex manifolds for TD05H turbos but the best manifolds to get for TD05H turbos is SBR manifolds, which you can jetcoat silver to make it look stainless and it would look almost polish.

Not sure why the previous owner did the external wastegate route but If I were to guess maybe for boost creep reasons (To have accurate boost without the boost increasing due to a 3" flowing turbo back). It is setup correctly though, send a pic if you want.

yea ill try and get some pics up asap.... as far as the manifolds with the wastegate flanges built in, everyone i see has the 2 bolt oval style flange on it where as the wastegate has a 4 bolt square flange... so is there an adapter or something that i could buy to convert the 2 bolt to a 4 bolt or is there a manufacturer that makes a manifold with a 4 bolt square flange for a wastegate? thanks for all the help so far though!

Thats because majority of people buy a TiAL wastegates which require only two bolts. I trust TiAL over HKS even their BOV is better. Not sure who makes 4bolt wastegate flanges on the manifolds but you gotta find out which manifold you want to get and find out if they come with the hks 4bolt flange, if not then ask if they can custom make a fitting for it that won't crack in the future. Good luck

so u recommend a 2 boly style tial type wastegate over the hks? i dont know much about them and dont know whats involved with changing them out? i dont mind spending the extra$ if its a smart move.. i just dont have any idea on which one to buy, all i know is that i have a 40mm hks wastegate...i just dont wanna buy something that i will have to change all kinds of settings from where it is to make it work since im new to this whole thing..
