I recently bought a 91 Laser RS Turbo from an auction. Before I started it for the first time I did some maintanence to it. New plugs, wires, air filter, oil & filter, new coolant, and timing belt. I replaced the leaking radiator and thermostat. Upon starting it up for the first time, everything sounded great. While looking under the hood I noticed coolant leaking by at the coolant hose at the thermostat and radiator. So, I opened the rad cap and noticed steam coming from it. For some reason it had the smell of exhaust to it. What I am wondering is, is there a possible exhaust leak from a blown head gasket allowing gases to enter the cooling system, or is there something else causing this excess pressure in the system. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Yes! indeed you may have a blown head gasket. I cannot think of how else exhaust gas could be getting into the coolant. Depending on where the gasket blew, oil can also get into the coolant and of course coolant can get in into the oil. Did you notice any coolant in the oil when you changed it? Realize of course that you should do a compression check on all four cylinders before you make any conclusions. You say you just changed the timing belt? Did you see any excessive oil wetness around the base of the head? If so check the torque on the head bolts. In the old days one had to constantly retorque the 1.3L MG Midget head bolts. They just would not stay tight. If it is a head gasket and you decide to replace it, you should take the head in to a shop and at least have the deck checked for flatness. I would have them do a basic valve job.
Are you ready for DSM madness? Good luck...
