Hi all,

I'm dealing with yet another problem and I was hoping for some advise..
I think I might have excessive crankcase pressure. The reason why I think this is in the past the dipstick popped out a bit. I thought this was because of wear on the dipstick, replaced with an other used one and it was fine. Didn't pop anymore. I also had some oil leakage from the oil filler cap. Replaced this with an aftermarket one. Which stopped this from leaking too.
But now I replaced the front seal, I had to take off the oil pan. And I just can't get it to seal again.. I tried 2 or 3 times, a mechanic has tried as well. Still leaks. I use grey sealant which never failed me before. Edges were cleaned of oil and old sealant. When searching through the forums I read something of excessive oil pressure and a leaky oil pan. Considering the dipstick and oil filler cap problems I had before I'm suspecting this, it could be coincidence ofcourse.

On top op this I also have a turbo that is leaking oil (it's still the stock one 14b).

And I have white deposits on my turbo inlet and all 4 spark plugs, but I think this is not related, I'm having a wideband sensor being shipped to me at the moment.

Can some one give me advise on how to check for excessive crankcase pressure? I started the engine and pulled the hose from the pcv valve and put my finger on it. I didn't feel pressure on my finger, I rather felt a slight sucking. But I'm going to replace it anyway. I will be doing a compression test on of these days too. Are there any other things I should check? How can I be sure if I have or don't have excessive crankcase pressure?

Thank you

Both the oil dipstick popping out and oil leaking out of the filler cap are extremely common in the dsmworld.

As to excessive crankcase pressure, it could be that the PCV valve is not doing it's job and is letting in boost, causing the crankcase to pressure. Again, very common problem. Give this a read when you have some time.

It also details a solution in the article above, but most dsmers end up buying a one way check valve to ensure no boost can enter into the crankcase.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link! There's a lot information there! :)

I will look into the catch cans. So a (Calan) catch can would eliminate ecessive crankcase pressure if it was due to a faulty pcv valve?
Can there be other causes besides the piston rings and the pcv valve? Or how could I be sure the pressure is gone?

Just make sure you get one of these 3/8" Kynar® Standard Check Valves | U.S. Plastic Corp. and you're guaranteed not to have a faulty pcv valve. They're good to 150psi and are a rock solid check valve. The factory pcv valve is not even close in performance and quality. ;)

That is odd. I bought a few and the ones I got were huge. I had to replace my factory hose because it wouldn't fit. It wasn't even close. That's odd since i bought that part number...

Huh. The hose that was on looked stock as it had the stock clamps and was old. Perhaps they sent me the wrong part then. I will get it sorted out LOL.

They measure right around 9mm so about 3/8". Guess the hose was not stock afterall. It doesn't matter anyway, since I just used a piece of fuel hose I had lying around and made it work. Thanks for the help.

Just to add for anyone else that needs a new PCV hose and doesn't want to use straight hose since it has a tendency to kink (ask me how I know), I went and bought a:

Help! (Dorman) part #46002 ($4)

The inner diameter is between 5/16 and 3/8 (.324) so it will be perfectly snug to work with the PCV valve and Check Valve. The hose comes with 2x 90 degree bends so it's perfect to cut apart and use however you want. It is also emission hose so it will have no problem with the oil that comes from the valve cover.

I hope this helps someone later LOL.
