Hi everyone, I recently had to get my 99 gst engine rebuilt and the stock turbo was damaged from the broken valves flying everywhere. So I decided to get a bigger turbo which was the evo 3 big 16g and it still has to come in but my question is can I run it without having any supporting mods yet, the car is mostly stock except for fmic, greddy bov, 3 in. R
am air intake and 3 in. downpipe. I do plan on getting dsmlink but I have yet to send in my ecu. I also plan on getting the supporting mods but I'm tight on funds atm because of the rebuild. I'm just trying to find out if my car will run normal even though it has a bigger turbo, I need this thing running as soon as the engine is ready. Thanks guys!

I have the wally, but I didn't want to install it until I had a fpr and a way to tune.
Also have no way to turn up the boost since I don't have a boost controller yet, so I should be fine?

Walbro 190 should work fine without an aftermarket FPR. Been running one on my GST now for a while.

I do have Link but the only tuning I did was a MAFComp adjust.

Also they have cheap boost controllers on eBay for $20

We were running the 255 on stock fpr and it seemed ok, have adjustable now.

Tried one of those ebay boost controllers and its junk, doesnt actually adjust boost and fell to pieces.
Get a hallman for $55

The general consensus on this form seems to be that the 255 is too much for the stock FPR, but my local DSM "master" swears he has never had a problem with a 255 and stock FPR.

^I have a 255 on my stock 2G fuel pressure regulator with no problems. But then I may also be a weirdo, it wouldn't be the first time :p
And as far as the OP's question I'll just corroborate what was said above that you should be OK as long as you keep the boost down. Get some 560 or slightly larger injectors once you can tune and you'll be a happy camper.

Not sure how much you looked into the install of this turbo on your car. This does not bolt in just like the T25/T28 on the 2g. Supporting vendors such as extremepsi carry the 14b/16g in 2g install kit:

Here is a great guide on the install:

If you are on a budget, this turbo will be fine at stock boost levels. Just keep it on the stock boost solenoid. Here are some additional suggestions:
  • Rewire your fuel pump.
  • Keep stock injectors until you have a method of tuning.
  • Purchase a boost gauge.
  • Purchase a wideband o2 sensor.
Once you have a method of tuning with the additional suggestions listed above, you can start safely increasing fuel.

Holy crap that is expensive for a J pipe, 4 an feed line and a drain tube...

That really is not a bad deal since you actually get everything to complete the job down to the gaskets. his would be my preferred kit:

Even more complete than the extremepsi kit with mostly OEM parts, but the OP is on a tight budget. Honestly, I would question anything sub $200.

The last option carefully waiting for the needed items to pop up on the the classifieds or post a WTB ad in good used condition. Then just purchase new gaskets/seals.

Like the previous posters said, keep the boost down. With a full 3in exhaust and i assume stock o2 housing, you will need to have the wastegate ported or you will see boost creep. Lastly, you can piece together a kit yourself for cheaper than those kits. I did it, seemed to work ok. the mtal piping is nice, but if you are going to a FMIC you can get away with keeping the soft tubes if you find the right j-pipe. I have one if you are interested. It isn't pretty but i had it on my car with same turbo. Don't need it anymore because i am installing a FMIC.

here's a link to the things i bought:
