I would like to possibly peice together a logger basicly from what I have found this would include:

Laptop
obd2 cable
serial null modem cable
usb serial adapter
software

however, I don't know the specifics that I need for each of those pieces
If anyone could help me figure out what exactly I would need to accomplish this it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any links to exact examples of what I need that would help a lot.

Thanks
Matt

Didn't think you can real time log on a laptop without like an EMS or DSMLink?.. I just used pocketlogger and would carry the laptop with me to sync with my palm and view the logs on my laptop.

There is some software out there that you are able to log with a laptop the other thing he can do is get palm emulating software and run pocketlogger and MMCD. John

Digimoto is one of the best logging programs out there for use with a laptop (http://www.digimoto.com/).

You're missing an interface in there somewhere. Typically, you'd need to connect that OBDII cable to the interface, which then gets connected to the null modem cable, which plugs into your computer (or in your case, it goes to the USB adapter, and then your computer).

If you don't use an interface, not only will your logging program not have any clue what the car is trying to tell it, but you'll most likely fry your USB port for using a 12V input rather than something at standard TTL levels (5V).

Besides the software and interface, most everything else on that list can be pretty generic. Look at BestBuy or Circuit City for your cables, and give obd-2.com a visit for the interface. You can also build your own if you're handy with electronics:

No. Sorry.

So wait, Does this work for 1g's? And if so this can replace DSMLink?

OBDII Dataloggers cannot work with 1g cars. The OBDII protocol wasn't officially implemented until 1996, although '95 DSMs were mostly OBDII compliant.

If you want to datalog with a 1g, you can make a very simple interface for under $15.

Here's the tech article for it. It even shows how to set up MMCd, one of the only good programs for logging a 1g.

Dataloggers will never replace DSMLink. DSMLink gives you the ability to actually manipulate and change engine parameters, while dataloggers just allow you to watch what's going on.
