I am just finishing building a 97 GST, and will be firing it up soon. Question is, if I choose not to hook up the EVAP system, can I just leave the cannister in and everything connected to it, and just not hook up the vaccum lines to the IM? Will the gas tank still be ventilated, or will it build pressure? I haven't found a solid answer. I have the EvoIII IM so I'm maxxed out on vaccum sources. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

As long as the vacuum lines from the control solenoids to the intake manifolds are left open this should allow the system to breath although the purge function is lost....If you want a small return on fuel economy without pissing off the tree huggers whom set up emissions laws in some areas just re-locate the purge control valve's vacuum source to the turbo inlet, or make an alternate vacuum source by building a proper remote multi port vacuum manifold with an aluminum block and 3-4 NPT fittings tapped for your sources and 1 larger diameter NPT fitting for the manifold hook up....at least that's what I've done and its worked pretty good......
 
The emissions/CEL won't be a problem as I have DSMLink. But I kind of wanted the system to work. But I was just wondering if it would be safe to get everything going. I have been working on this car for a year and have never driven it, so I just want to get it running! I just don't want it to smell like gas fumes, or have a ton of pressure in the tank either.
 
Just giving my experience, with the canister hooked up to the gas tank breather hose I did not really experince any fumes. It wasnt until I removed my charcol canister that I began to smell some fumes from time to time.

Me too. I have removed the purge valve, solenoid and associated parts under the hood. The hard line that comes through the firewall has some vacuum hose attached to it with the free end pointing down towards the ground right behind the tranny. I never smell gas when I'm under the hood. I still have the charcoal canister but keep in mind that my setup is different. The canister is actually located inside the fuel tank on some 98/99's.
