Hello, I would like to bring my Eclipse GST spyder to about 320-350 wheel horsepower, but the engine has about 133.000 miles, what to do?? do i need to do a revision??? and if so, what do I need to replace, can somebody please give me some helpfull advice, oyea, it's an auto transmission

thx

At the very minumum, I'd run a compression test, leakdown test, then get up under the car and pull the oil pan (I know, PITA), and check the tolerances on all the rod/main bearings. If all that checks out ok, then I'd replace the timing belt, eliminate the balance shafts, and you should be good to go.

if the bearing are worn, with wich one's should I replace them, and where are the balance shafts located???? and how to remove???

thx for replying

what? no, 133,000 miles is just getting broke in....no need to check mains and all that...do the compression and leakdown and replace the timing belt...dont fix it til its broke :thumb:

I prefer to fix it before it's broke - I know that goes against our DSM tradition, but it seems to help in the long run :shhh:

I always use Clevite bearings - as far as balance shaft removal, check go look at http://www.vfaq.com .

he's right!
My new project car has 233,000 miles and runs great, The cams have indentations in the lobs from the roller rockers. They guy I bought it from babied this thing from the day he bought it. The 14b still boosts hard with no shaft play , and the car still has the original clutch.

original clutch? now i'm impressed heh. i thought i was doing well with my 130,000 mile original clutch, but after going to the track a few times now, clutch is dead :( act 2600 on it's way and so is the 20g turbo  let's hope she will hold.

I have another motor already built, my car is getting painted this week so when it's back I'm dropping in the other engine. I can't wait to see how the clutch looks, It's definetly in better shape than the tranny. :thumb:

It depends on if he knows the full history of the car or not - check out these mains - they came from an engine with 135k on it:

you could literally track a ball bearing in the grooves in those mains. The rod bearings weren't in any better shape.

If anyone's interested to see the full project in the works, here it is:
My project car

hey, No I don't know the history of my car, I'm from Belgium and the car is from the US, so I let it imported, do you guys know how I can buy stuff for my spyder from ebay in the us or so?? and how it is shipped, greetz ET

yeah my engine has 130,000 on it and i just replaced the timing belt...its still runnin fine to me :thumb:

huafist - i like the project, looked like the old motor was majorly overheated. Maybe you should keep the neon green though. :barf: keep it up.

As for the old motor thing, i would just get it up to date before trying to make serious power. IE plugs, wires, check for boost leaks, change oil if necessary, timing belt if its getting near the that time. Pulling the BS shafts always increases reliability of the motor, and gives you the added oil press so might want to consider it. As for pulling the pan i think thats overkill. If it runs good i would just do the maintance and go with. I had 150k on my old motor and 20gd also and was a beast, i pulled it and then sold it cause it still wouldnt die.

thats my $.02

If your gunna put it down the track on stock internals, even at 130k you'd better check them unless you know how the car was driven before hand. If it had been run into the ground, chances are it was run hot, on low oil etc. If your putt'n back and forth to work, let it break.
