engine weight, shipping, and random guesses [Merged 1-8]

I shipped a short block once with Road Way freight, pretty easy. I didn't have a crate or anything just took it to terminal and they helped me put in on a pallet and package it. It cost me $150 bucks. Just go to the Road Way web site you can find a terminal near you on there.

Sorry for resurectiing an old relic but Do you guys have any idea how much a complete motor weighs on a palate? This would not include any of the accesories like an alt and what not. I would include an oil pan though. Thanx for any positive responses. Oh, and i was thinking about using BAX Freight but after reading the posts above, Im going to call Yellow and have them give me a quote.

Using the online estimator I get a rate of about $400 to ship a 420a motor from 21157 to 54751. That is the UPS and FedEx website

But when I try this other freight website ( Freight Companies Trucking Companies & Freight Shipping Companies - FreightCenter.com) I got $180. The problem with this is that where do I drop off and pick up the motor? It doesn't list where it just calls it Carrier 1, 2, 3, 4.

class 70, weight:300, L:30", W:30", H:30", shipped on a pallet to a terminal

Does this seem right? Are my dimensions wrong or weight? $400 seems like a lot to ground ship a motor, and if that one site says $180 that seems liek a more reasonable estimate.

If someone could try and get a shipping quote for me I'd really appreciate it because I feel like I'm doing it wrong.

How much does the 4g63 fwd turbo trans and complete turbo motor weigh? I am trying to plan out a configuration for mid engine rwd...

I know this isn't everything you asked for, but my 4g63 bottom end, assembled weighed 170 when it was shipped to me. Maybe someone else can give you the transmission and other specs as well . Hope this helps some.

Well the head weighs about 40.

Plus the intake mani turbo and other sensors it is around 220. Now i need the trans weight.

Who here has ship a motor/trans? Got a few questions.

How much does it cost for shipping and packaging stuff?

How do you send it and how do you build the box for it?

I use to ship motors and trannies daily when i was the shipping manager at a local salvage yard. CCX and DHL both ship trannies and engines. The best way to do it is make a small wooden pallet that has 2 beams where the oil pan lip can set on it, then put 2 more 2x4's cross ways to elevate it up so a forklift can get uder it easy and not have to touch teh actual engine (believe me they WILL use a fork lift on it, so give them an area to lift on besides your intake and exhaust manifolds.

Then wrap it up in black trash bags with a TON of clear packing tape (we used black stretchy plastic on rolls we had) TShipping usually ranges about 60-75 bucks on a FWD trans halfway across the states, motors range from 100 - 175 (most 4 bangers are about 125 - 150 )

If you need an example of the pallets i make for shipping motors let me know, or if there's any other info or truck lines you'd like to know how to get ahold of i cna help ya there too

I sent a trans from Ontario to Alberta. I just went to Walmart and bought a rubbermaid tub and put it in that, then had the Purolator guy come get it, I then helped him load it into the truck.

Easy.

Sure, You can contact almost ANY freight company in the Seattle area. UPS Freight, United Freight, Able Freight, Seattle Freight, Transfair North Freight, etc... Just give any of them a call. I had my engine shipped from Dallas Texas to Southern Illinois using a freight company and it only cost me $125 at around 350lbs or so.

I recommend requesting a bid from RL Carriers once you list your shipment for bid on that site. They shipped my last engine for me. Cost me $200 from Northern Minnesota to North Central West Virginia, to ship 450lbs on a standard palette, with $500 worth of insurance, and it was here in 2.5 days.

There are also several local carriers on that site that will sometimes agree to do your shipment for less than a commercial outfit if they have room on a truck and are already going to a destination close to you. But usually they take a little longer to deliver.

I finally sold my 6 bolt that I have for sale in the classifieds. Now it is time to ship it out to it's new home. I know that I am going to ship it freight on a pallett. My question is, what is the best way to secure the engine onto the pallet for transport? Thanks in advance, Craig

Steel band straps, the shipping depot should be able to provide that service. Quite strong, yet easily removed with 2 pair of channel locks or a pair of side cutters or snips.

I just bolted 2 longblocks to a crate. I drilled some holes in the pallet and used 3 pieces of 2x4 per engine. Then I put some bolts through the pallet directly into the side of the short block, 4 bolts per engine and all in the short block.

I wish I saw this thread last night when I was doing it cause I would have taken pictures. It's all boxed up now and you can't really see how I did it. Although it's very sturdy and secure.
