Hey I got a 1996 Eclipse GSX and the timing belt jumped and bent the pistons so i was wondering if i could put a EVO engine in my car. I know they are both 4g63t engines but I'm not sure that it would fit. If anyone could help me out that would be great!

not from a new evo, the engines are set up opposite, tranny is on the drivers side, not passenger

The what number evo engine should i consider? Would the newer evos work if i pulled out the tranny also or wouldnt it work?

A JDM evoIII motor would work, but whats the point? You said it yourself, they both have 4g63t's, so why swap to the same motor? JDM is not any better or different, just do a 6bolt swap. And no, the newer evo motors will not work, like previously stated, the tranny is on the drivers side of the car. For the reference, your not going to be able to pull the motor and leave the tranny in the car.

The new evo motor will not work. Search this forum and you will find 100's of threads on it. The evo motor people usually drop in are the evo 3-6 motors. You can build a motor yourself that is the same or better. If the timing jumped you bent the valves so the head will need to be rebuilt and you could pull the pistons with out dropping the motor. So just rebuild the head and put new pistons in and reuse the rest of the bottom end since it should still be ok.

just for referance, you can pull a motor and leave the tranny in , ive done it many times. to the original poster; if your timming belt snapped then you bent your valves not your pistons?(you can only crack your pistons,if tour timming belt breaks) most likely you just bent your valves(usally what happens). if you want to save some money and time, get your self a new timming belt and tensioner, make sure all your timming componets are in check, and spend about 200 bucks or soo, on valves and seals. have a machine shop install them, and be on your way. if you want have some real realibilty and power, drop the longblock and get your self a 6 bolt, and drop in some forged intls. trust me you wont regret it.hope this helps

I have never pulled a motor with the tranny in or heard of anyone doing this. Never even crossed my mind as a possibility. Nonetheless, I stand corrected.

Yes you can put an Evo motor in an eclipse, ....... if you have enough $! I have seen pics on here of peoples cars with evo motors in em after the wisemen and moderators said it cant be done. Is it practicle, no.

I knew someone would chime in with a "if you have enough money" comment. Of course anything can be done with the right amount of money. We are talking about practical, common, everyday swaps. But thanks for the info, do have links to any of these dsm's with newer evo motors in them? I wouldn't mind seeing them.

The only thing not practicle is this thread being started in the first place. If you read the link even that thread shouldnt have been created. Nobody searches anymore.

Yeah man, I was just saying. I agree, no one searches, I'm just not the type of person to say go search. Thanks for the link, I appreciate it.

For the record, I believe it is the 1-3 evo motors that will bolt up to our cars.
