Engine stalls on hard accleration in 2nd gear

I have a stock 97 eclipse rs. When ever I am driving in second gear around 2500 rpm and I decide to accelerate hard ( as in pedal to the floor) I get to around 4500 or 4000 rpm and my engine stalls out. I come to a stop and the car starts right back up and I'm on my way.When I accelerate not as hard I don't seem to have any problems. It seems to happen when I put the pedal to the floor. My engine has stalled 3 times and all 3 were in second gear about to go to 3rd gear. I have no other issues with the car. The engine seems to run nicely without any idle problems, abnormal sounds etc. Any ideas on what could be wrong???

I would start with the airflow sensor. Start simple and work your way up.

Does your car throw a CEL when it happens??

Also check the clamp tightness on all the intake hoses/ducts.
