Engine revs a little between shifts, anyone else had this problem?

This happens on my 92 tsi. I bought it because it had been sitting up over a year and the owner thought the tranny was bad. I put a new tcu in it and got it going again. Every now and then the engine revs a little between shifts. Not all of the time, maybe once or twice out of 20 shifts. Is this the tranny slipping? Solenoids dirty?

I recently drained the fluid and added 3.5 quarts of fresh atf+3. I'm planning to drain it again this weekend and change the filter. Is there anything that I can look at/ inspect while the pan is off?

Would a shift kit/ new end clutches fix or help this problem? I don't think it's serious because it doesn't happen on every shift but what do I know? Thanks in advance!

Girlfriends talon did the same thing around 85k and eventually needed a rebuild. The clutches are worn out and its pretty common around here, especially on the 3-4 shift.

A good rebuild will do the trick. Make sure you check out IPT before you go to your local guy. You can at least buy some of the parts from them and then have your local install them if you can not afford to go all out.

Hope you have a good amount of dough set aside, this might hurt.

3-4 slips are due to a bad end clutch. It can be had for $90 and changed very easily. There would be no need for a rebuild. I've got bad solenoids causing 2-3 slip on my tranny. I hate stock automatics :notgood:

curious, how do ya know its the solenoid(s) causing it? my '91 talon tsi just started doin this (flare up. when it seems to pop into neutral for a second before shifting) on the 2-3 shift on wednesday. had the fluid and filter changed today, but didnt cure it (didnt think it would, but its worked for others so its worth a try right?)
if theres a way to test em, id like to know.
any other helpful info you or anyone else may have regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

edit- ah, i read some other threads. i see you are getting the CEL telling you the solenoids are bad.

i havent tried pulling any tcu codes yet. i keep meaning to, but forget. ill have to see about doing that tomorrow.
and wow. that solenoid was $260ish? dang.

also, i have no CEL on. im not sure if my year puts up a cel for tcu stuff? dunno. havent really seen any mention of it before. lemme know

Solenoids can be tested, but im sure it would have to be by a qualified shop. IPT offers the solenoids for like $200 and thats for all 3 or 4, whichever you have. Yes, mine are triggering a CEL code P1750.

I would get flare ups occasionaly during my 2-3 upshift and eventually the trans had to be rebuilt. My clutch pack was burnt out......

My car does this on every shift, not all the time, but sometimes it does. Is this something to be worried about, and should I look into getting the tranny rebuilt?
