I am purchasing a 97 GST (5 speed) that has lost compression in 1 of the cilinders. This is the original stock motor from the factory in this car. Rather that having this engine rebuilt, would it be more efficiant for me to swap with a used motor? Can anyone tell me if this comes stock with the 7 bolt or 6 bolt? I know one is better than the other. Thanks!

Well, if it is indeed the factory motor still in the car, then your car is a 7bolt. As for being better, that's disputable. Most people (obviously) will tell you the 6 bolt is better because it is more reliable in the way that it is a lot less likely to get crank walk which will destroy the engine. As for the repair/ replace debate, that is up to you. The restrictions come down to the time/money available to you. If you are going to replace the motor, try and go with a 6 bolt. Of course, that's just IMO.

You need price things out and compare, with buying a used motor and just swapping it in your just gambling on when that motor will go out. A 6 bolt would be ideal but then again if your not trying to make over 400hp then a 7 bolt can be very reliable.

There is much info about 6 bolt swaps, you will need to search and read as much as possible before attempting it.
