Engine Removal From top or Bottom?

Getting ready to pull motor on my 1g Talon AWD for rebuild. My question, is it easier to pull motor from top or has anyone had any experience dropping it from the bottom? I'm doing all of this at my friends shop so I'm going to have acess to a car lift and anything i'll need. I've done research but everyone just suggest from top but don't really give a reason why. Any advice would be great thanks! :talon:
 
Prob drop the tranny first since it's easy to pull axles and get them out of the way.

You remove the lower "A" arm off the hub assembly, remove the hdwe holding the torque arms that are attached to the lower arm, then rotate the hub assembly, still attached to the struts to pull axles (this keeps the alignment intact) with steering wheel unlocked so the wheel can rotate on each extreme to remove each axle out of the hub, then out of the tranny.

Tranny is then a snap to drop and get out of the way (and you can do a clutch while this is out as well...)

Then, lift the motor out.
 
From the top, unless you want to drop the sub frame.

Also, lift it out with the transmission. No sense in removing it separately.
 
The top was easiest for me, however I had to remove the support from below to remove my T-case as I am AWD.

Removing the support is not needed to remove the t-case. 1g or 2g. everything can be taking out together. I've done it. But I suggest removing t-case then engine and tranny out the top.

You can or not undo the exhaust to get it out. But undoing it makes it easier to get the t-case off.
 
I dropped the engine and trans together through the bottom in an hour. It's worth mentioning that I also used a vehicle lift. Probably easier through the top if you don't have access to a lift

I do have access to a car lift that's why I'm asking. Did you have to remove or drop the subframe too.

I found it 100 times easier to remove the upper control arm and strut bolt when pulling axles.
 
No subframe stayed in

Another question not to get off subject here but.... I'm thinking of sending the block off to Buschur Racing to get a stage 3 build which is a little over 3k. Here's my ? though how hard is it to actually rebuild the motor pull/put parts back together. Honestly the Rings part is the part that scares me the most. Also I will have to have a maching shop clean up the block and what not. Might have to be bored over. Any adivce that would be great. thanks!

You dont have to remove the able from the hub to remove them from the tranny.

Just undo uca nut and tie rod end remove the caliper. Tie the caliper up out of the way. Now remove the uca from the spindle and pop the axle out of the tranny as you pull the spindle out words.

If you dint have an axle socket or it is, stuck in the hub. Do this.

But either way it doesn't even take two hours to pull engine and trannsmission together. 1g, 2g, awd, or fwd all the same.
 
Def. drop it down if you have access to a lift. It's the easyest way and no engine scratching everywhere in the engine bay like when you pull it up.

I've tried the two way and it's easier and faster to drop it

i personally like dropping motors out the bottom of FWD cars, even if i have to remove the subframe.

i removed my talons (awd) motor/trans from the bottom and it was just a step by step thing, no snags or hassles.

i have done a 420a out of a 98 eclipse both ways, and bottom was way easier.

pulling the exhaust out of an awd 1g is a piece of cake as well.

i say if you got the lift, drop it out the bottom. :thumb:
 
I would highly suggest investing in the factory engine pull brackets if you don't have them already! If you get those and a load leveler (I used a harbor freight one) you can pull the engine with the tranny out in a matter of minutes...Just adjust the load leveler to where the tranny side drops a little and it should all clear from the top with the engine hoist. It also makes dropping the engine back in a piece of cake!
