I've searched and couldn't find any information, but is there anything really stoping me from dropping the engine, trans, brakes, shocks and steering assembly out the bottom by the sub-frame. I need to rebuild my trans, do the CV's, and tie rods, xfer case recall, i've got a leak and a in my power steering. I figure dropping it out the bottom gives me easier access to all the items. Anybody done this with success? or without?!
 
I have a 2G and found it way easier to pull the assembly out the bottom. Not sure on yours, but I didn't have to drop the whole subframe. Depending on if your A-frame bolts to the subframe you'll have to drop the struts too and that could be a headache. I'd just drop the engine and trans and then do all the suspension work you have to while the motor is out.
 
thanks, i might do that. I have Energy Suspension subframe bushings to put in anyway, so the subframe is comming out nomatter what. How did you lift the car over the engine?

How did you drop the engine and trans without taking apart the suspension. As far as I can see, the CV's must come out, so the control arms must come out, which means the shocks must come out.... or is there an easier way that i am just not seeing
 
i pulled engine and trans out the top with no problem. Bottom would seem difficult bc the suspension.
 
Keeping in mind that my control arms were comming off anyway for new bushings, and ball joints, i found this way easy. If I wasn't doing the suspension work, i probably just would have come out the top. But I'm at the point of dropping the motor and trans and subframe onto the bottom frame of an engine stand, with a thick piece of plywood accross it. This way I bolt everything up, then just lower the car back onto the engine.
 
I prefer the top method. You can do the bottom if you have a lift to raise the car over the motor. The top for me was easier. Just undo the mounts and unplug a few things and it lifted right out.
 
Unless I'm missing it surprisingly I see no Tech Article on this procedure - you could be a HERO you know...

ha yeah...its not my first time. I'll probably write one up now that i think about it. This is how we did it when we stuffed my buddys Fiero with a Northstar, its the only way it would go in, and only way it will come out. To be fair, he doesn't have steering components to worry about, but the whole engine assembly comes out with 4 bolts. A DSM is a little more complicated, but not hard if you are firmiliar with the car and suspension components
